I was a teenager in the 60's my family did not have a telephone, I had to walk to the corner gas station pay phone to call my girl friend. My little brother was the remote control. Kids today have thinks to easy, they don't know to do with out or wait for things.

I was 12 before I used my first remote. I did not own a cell phone until I was 25 and I got my first pager at 22. I love my iPod Touch and iPad but I prefer the sound of vinyl. I feel kids now would be lost with the Internet, cell phone, text messages, and the Xbox 360. I enjoy playing Forza 4 but my life does not revolve around it. I enjoyed riding my bicycle when I was a kid, you do not see that much anymore.
In the summerof 67 I was between 6th and 7th grades, my older brother and I were "slaved" to an old carpender to frame a house to sell. There was power and electric tools, but we were to learn how to do it the old way before we allowed the easy way. The summer between 11th and 12th grades my brother and I remodeled a 170 year old house and put a whole new second story and roof on, for his family to have their first home. About 10 years latter my brother and best friend helped me redo a 110 year old farm house, just up the road, for my family. Most of the time we had power but there were times we went on without, because of our "slave summer". I always had my kids working on our gardens or painting with me or sweeping strees at work. When it came time to get a paying job, their emploiers were overjoyed after the first day usually. My oldest worked for an old time carpenter, started as a laborer; at the end of his second summer, he was given a letter of recommandation that he was "A Fit Carpenter", pretty good for a 17 year old. The youngest worked concrete for 2 summers plus the first year out of school, his boss almost cried when he went to collage. The middle 2 are equally hard working and gifted and have climed the ladder for their emploiers. There was a summer when they got 1 hour of TV a day. I bought a stack of used books for them to read. Authors like Dickens and Kippling; Some people quote from "Star Wars", my offsring often quote "The Jungle Books" or "Captions Courageous"!
We didn't have any kind of phone and a remote control would not have been any use because we also didn't have a tv. Larry

All this modern technology and I still don't have a flying car.

When I was a kid we didnt even have a tv, or indoor plumbing. No power mower, sometimes no phone. No medical insurance. Lots of church, hunting, fishing, ate okay, the folks didnt owe a penney to anyone, they never had a credit card. If there was such a thing as welfare they wouldnt have taken it. This was in the 40s, early 50s. We werent the exception either, more like the rule. Both parents worked. So did I and my sister at about 12 up picking strawberrys and working in the fields alongside the brasseros. That was rual centeral wisconsin.

our first TV (was black and white, it had a light maple console and weighed a ton) (1964)
our first car with A/C (1965)
our first record player (my 1st 45 was "American Woman" by The Guess Who) (1965)
first window A/C in my room (1971)
my first real calculator (an HP 34c that I bought used in 1981)
my first car phone (1985)
first and only pager (1987) (it's for sale if anyone is interested!)
my first cell phone was in 1990 (Motorola "brick")
my first real stereo-I built 2 mono blocks Heath Kits that I still use (1983)
my first computer was a Commodore 64 (1st game was Pong)(1985)
my first answering machine was in 1980 in college
my first radar detector (proved repeatedly to be a handy gadget) (1980)
All are second nature now if not obsolete!

This is the type of phone my dad "STILL" has in his houe, on the wall, with a 2' cord! He says the telephone was the worse invention ever made!

Holy Moly! I just had a flashback to a COBOL routine I was trying to write 40 years ago.
"Get your 99s in!"
Never again.
Think about this, when we had TV without remote control, we only had 3 channels, and maybe one UHF. You didn't need remote because you looked at the TV Guide and you new what you were going to watch. Imagine kneeling in front on a big console TV, cranking on the big knob, sorting through 70 or so channels. And who misses getting up to go answer the phone? Sometimes life is better now.
