Moon clips & 627

You can shoot it with out the moon clips but why would you want to? When buying the clips there is a big difference in what is out there, different brass have different size grooves and moon clips come in different thickness, .018, .020, .022, .025 that I'm aware of .o25 will work with most headstamps EXCEPT Winchester or WW brass, Starline will be the loosest of all. But the use of the moon clips will sure help on the time it takes you to reload and shoot again AND it makes picking up the brass way easy especially if you reload.

As previously stated moon clips are NOT required in the .327 since it IS a rimmed cartridge and will index on its RIM even in a revolver cut for moon clips.
However, as previous posters have already opined...if one CAN use moon clips, one SHOULD use moon clips for serious revolver carry.

Moon clips make speed reloads "speedier."
Moon clips make ejecting empties MORE RELIABLE when one is fumbling around in an adrenalin fueled urgency.

Using it mainly at the range , not in a extreme hurry to reload & punch holes in paper. Any effect on accuracy.

Nope. Just load up a bunch of moon clips before you go to the range and if you decide you want to shoot more than you loaded you can shoot the rest without clips. No problems.

I find clips make it more accurate. I don't see that much extra speed in loading. Speed clips are faster.

I have had this impression as well but have not done the A/B testing to prove. Does change the way the primers appear. I have speed clips and moon clips and agree that the speed loaders do seem faster but that is an over practiced activity because I have more practice with them whether with Ruger GP100 or old time Dan Wesson. I suspect one could get reasonable proficient with either. helps that they share the prep of unloading and setting up the cylinder for the reload. What does Jerry M the revolver shooter extraordinaire use?

I have moon clips for all of my N frames, had the ones that did not have them cut by KT. I also have my 632 pro cut (the 640 came cut). I really like the fast reloads. I have tubes, metal or locally made leather that hold 3 extra moon clips of either size. Easy in the pocket or on a belt. For .45 ACP large size speed loaders will carry 2 in each pouch so you get 4 reloads in 2 pouches. Since I am sort of a nut for revolvers in semi auto calibers, I like to find different ways to pack extra clips. So far I have wheelguns in .32 ACP, .380 ACP, 9mm, .38 Super, 10mm and .45 ACP. MY 940 is a BUG for my BHP a combination I have packed for decades-still works. I can load the 940 from a BHP mag if needed.

I have the 627 and I agree with the above post that speed loaders are better than moon clips in my experience. The 627 moon clips hold 8 rounds which makes it somewhat more problematic to load in a quick fashion with 357 , 38 special not bad at all. The rounds dangle at the ends and somewhat difficult to get to load all at once in my limited experience. I still have twenty of them loaded. If you go with the moon clips I would get a loader as it will tear your hands up without one if you load a bunch.

If you look at his YouTube record breaking 12 shots in 3 seconds it shows the use of moon clips for his reloads.

I have a 627 and a lot of speed loaders and moon clips. Both work fine. It is important to match the moon clips to the appropriate brand of ammo -- not all clips work with all ammo.

5Star makes great speedloaders for the 627 if you want to go that way. Seems to me that one advantage of a speedloader is that it is less fragile for carrying than moon clips.

Groo here
The big problem with moon clips in 357mag or long cases is
that the cart "wiggels " causing a mis match with the chambers.
The linger the shell the more the wiggle.
9MM,40S&W, 10mm, 38super,and 45acp are all short, even then,
some use 45GAP with moon clips for even less wiggle...

5Star indeed makes great speedloaders and I also highly recommend them. I got the deal with range block and two speedloaders for around $65.

Full moon clips on the 625 is perfection.
Full moon clips on the 627 is just "ok" IMHO.

They work but are pretty flimsy in comparison. There is also several fit variables in the dimensions of the clips and the brass cases used. I prefer speed loaders for the 627.
