Hello all,

I just bought my first smith and wesson. I tried a speedloader but the factory grip interferes with it so I thought I'd try to find some moon clips. I'm having problems finding the moon clips for the model 60 5 shot 357.

I was curouis if you guys might point me in the right direction.

thanks

You will need to have the cylinder machined to accept moon clips. I have had two K frames machined and they work great. I plan to have a M-60 done in the near future. I had mine done by a shop in PA, "pinnacle-guns.com" You can get the moon clips from "TKCustom.com" , they also will machine the cylinder. Much faster and more compact to carry than traditional speed loaders.

What he said with a 2nd added to it. :D

Safariland COMP-1

I acknowledge the speed advantage of moon clips over conventional speedloaders and use them in competition but in real world situations I doubt the slight difference in speed would be an issue. I doubt anyone would leave cover, take their eyes off of the target to focus on the reload while running if the target/targets are shooting back. The Safariland COMP-1 loaders work very well and much better than the HKS. The Safariland holds the rounds in tension making the reload easier and they don't rattle like the HKS so they are quieter. They also don't require machining of the cylinder. Here is a link so you can look at them:

Safariland COMP-1 Revolver Speedloader Charter Arms, S&W 5-Shot 38 Special Polymer Black - MidwayUSA

I think the .38 moon clips are too fragile to use for a reload outside of competition, especially if you are going to pocket carry. They still make for more positive ejection so you might get it moon clipped and use a speedloader like the Safariland Comp I or the SL variant (Products) for the reloads.

I too use moonclips in my TK modified 686, The really good thing about this system is that you can still use loose ammo and speed loaders. You should know that .38 moonclips are ammo sensitive, the don't work with Federal and many other makers brass. Mine will only work with Starline and Remington. For speedloaders I found a new maker of speedloaders called 5 Star on the web. They are aluminum w/delrin insides, they work MUCH better than HKs speedloaders( I have many of those too)

I agree that you need to find an older set of Uncle Mikes grips & the speedloaders will work with them..

Is your revolver cut factory for moon clips??

I'm not sure, I've never owned a double action before.

I did get the hks to finally work somewhat. You have to just barely put the points of the bullet in (just enough leverage to twist) and it will work good enough. Everyonce in a while a shell wants to hang up and not go down.

I have the factory rubber grips (3 finger grooves). I was thinking of going with a Hogue 3 finger grooves in a wood. Do you think the Hogue grip is thinner, thicker, or about the same?
