I would like to ask about basic procedure in loading and unloading moon clips properly on an 8 shot moon clip like on a S&W 627-5 . I can't believe at 65 I have never used them. Please excuse my lack of knowledge.

Smartest procedure is to purchase a proper tool like a BMT Mooner or Moon Clip Tool.

Don't try to load/unload the clips by hand -- it's a surefire way to frustrate yourself and bend the clips. ;)

Those 8-round clips are much thinner than the sturdy ole .45 Auto ones.
Using the proper moon clip tool to insert the cartridges will minimize the chance of bending a clip.
Bent (even a tiny bit) clips will not allow the revolver to revolve.
As for de-mooning, I also use a homemade tubing tool as described above.
Mine runs 38 Mid:

I have found it more difficult to get the spent cases out of the moon clips. I currently use a wood dowel to remove them and its not very easy.

Another Plus 1 for the BMT mooner/demooner tool....
Why have two tools?

It makes the whole business of loading and unloading, the easiest I've seen....

Don't know what I'd do without the BMT.....

Another vote here...

Yes, they do have some cost behind them, but I don't think there is a better moon clip tool out there. I have it for my 9mm J-frame, and if I decide to cut my 629-1 for moon clips, I'll likely buy another one.

Some clips are brass specific. Try different brands to see which ones fit better. Not all the brass is made with the same dimensions.

Brownells sells a screwdriver type of demooner. They work great.

Kind of depends on the moon clip and the brass.
I have 3 different brands of moon clips for my 929.. The Ranch and Revolver Supply moon clips loads easy by hand. I use a tube with a notch / screw driver device like the one Brownell's sells, that I made for de-mooning.

The TK Custom moonclips are really tight and I use the Mooncliptool.com, tool to load the clips.

I also use Ranch Product moon clips for my 45 acp. and 40 which load easy by hand. And I use Brownell's screw driver type de-mooning tool for them..

For range use I don't think you can beat the "Rimz" plastic clips. Load and unload by hand and work well.

My only concern would be if I was going to carry the clips ready for use in my pocket, the steel ones may hold the cartridge a little more securely.

Thanks again, I personally would not CARRY revolver with moon clips for concealed carry. That's me, I'm 65 and not comfortable with accessories under stress. I have a H&K P7 I am comfortable with .

My personal preference is for metal moons - not terribly fond of the Rimz clips. Moot point in this case anyway - they don't make Rimz clips for the 8-round 627/327.

Adios,

Moon Clips

I love the tool because it saves my thumbs. I've sliced my thumb many times loading moon clips. I don't know if they have 8 rounders, but Ranch Products makes plastic ones that work great in my 625. They're made out of the same stuff Glocks are made of, I think. And they work without tools.
