I am considering having a Model 25 converted to be able to use .45ACP as well as .45 Colt. For those of you who have done this, how is it working out? What is .45ACP accuracy like with the extra-long bullet jump? How well does the .45 Colt work after the conversion? Any accuracy, hard ejection or case sticking issues?

Thanks for your replies.

I also would like to know how the conversion works. From what I have learned sofar is that only the 45 colt gun can be a conversion gun.A 45acp can not be converted to handle 45 colt, correct??? If the colt cylinder is cut to accept acp moon clips how come that the 45 colt round dosen't go in deeper causing misfires?

Keep in mind that only moonclipped .45 ACPs can be used - the rim step is too deep to shoot them 'clip-less - and - no .45 Auto Rims, either. I have both a -6 & -7 625MG in .45 Colt - and considered it - briefly. I like my .45 Colt revolvers as-is. Besides, they'll take those short-cased SASS .45 'Specials' and .45 Schoffields, too - as-is.

PS My 627's came moonclip-ready - and I have a few HKS-587's for my one 686+. Good that it is available - for the 4" 627 production revolver - if you can find one!

625mg

:D I had my Smith 625mg done by mark at Pinnacle, It was a great conversion and I no remorse about doing it. I shoot the 45acp in clips and the 45lc with out, with the 230-250 grn ammo I shoot I dont even have to adj the sights when switching back and forth, I just clean the cyl good like going back and forth in a 38/357. Accuracy in it is great and I can see no ill effect on the 45lc or the longer jump for the 45acp. As to your question about the depth, the 45lc round head spaces off of the rim and the moon clip acts as a rim for the 45acp so no miss firing is going to happen. If you have any more questions please feel free to pm me or e-mail me.

In my experience this conversion is hit or miss. I had it done to an older 25-7 and it was a disaster plagued with misfires and poor accuracy. It all depends on how tight the .45 Colt chambers are cut at the factory. It seems some of the newer revolvers are made with tighter and more consistent chambers, since some shooters are reporting success with this conversion.

Moonclip Conversion

I had TK Custom "moonclip" a 629 a few years ago and it works just fine. When I use it for bowling pins with my heavier loads, I shoot .44 Magnums without the moonclips, but I can also use it in practical shooting matches with .44 Specials and moonclips. It was well worth the money.

Is this the same type of moonclip conversion that comes from the S&W factory on some guns? I'm wondering if the ones from the factory have to be used with moon clips or if they can be used either way.

I would just put the money you were going to spend on the conversion towards the purchase of a 625 or 25 in 45 acp.

I have not altered any of my S&W's with the exceptions of some other grips (stocks to be correct). I would leave the model 25 alone and look for a 45ACP model. I think one of the Mountain Guns would be a good choice. Easy to pack and fun to shoot.

re: ".44 Magnums without the moonclips, but I can also use it in practical shooting matches with .44 Specials and moonclips."

I've long wanted to add LC to my 45 acp 625 capacity. From what I've found thru rather extensive searching, that it can't be done going FROM the RIMLESS acp setup to same cylinder LC moon clip.

I've been lead to accept the 627 clip/no clip depends on that crucial factor: rimed to rimed. As is the 44M/44S set up above.

And other various knowledgeable technical types, point out that I really am not gaining all that much in my intended use at least, for the cost/effort of acp/LC in the 625.

And in the end, I'd rather have excuse to acquire another fine Smith.
