More good news from Tennessee

Good News. Before I got my permit, I made a lot of trips to the range with pistol in glove box and ammo in trunk. Always felt a little foolish.

Chattanooga police chief sounds like a real piece of work. Comes from Austin, Tx and has "mixed feelings" when we have had a law allowing us to carry handguns in a vehicle without a permit in place since 2007, and had "traveling" statutes before that. Not to mention the ability to carry a long arm loaded as well.

Why are so many police admin types against law abiding citizens being able to protect themselves?

Phil,

That new chief of police will soon acclimate to living in a free state soon enough.
He'll get over that feeling of narcissism, after interacting with the good folks of Tennessee.

As for the THP Col. concerns......When I worked the road,
I thought everyone was armed....Or should be. :D

Folks need to be able to defend themselves and their families while traveling....Everywhere.

All My Best,
Dave

That's just good officer safety. Assume everyone is armed and focus on the "jeopardy" instead of the "ability."

^^^^^^^^

If'n a feller's got his mind right....He won't get caught off center. ;)

*I was gonna say 'get caught with ur britches down'....

But that's done happen'd to one THP trooper

Cypher,

There are always critics anytime a pro-gun law is proposed and passed. History proves the critics wrong, and the story properly ends with that reminder. ;)

----------

The senator said he understands why law enforcement may have initial concerns, noting he has family members who are or have been police officers.

But he noted Tennessee police were unified in their opposition to the original handgun-carry permit law passed in the 1990s. The law never resulted in mass violence predicted by some critics, Bell said.

"I understand their perspective, but I also understand that citizens have a constitutional right to defend themselves," Bell said.

Exactly right. Thanks for saying that! :)

I think things will proceed apace in TN and they will be not much the worse for wear. I don't know why so many law enforcement officers and public officials dance around like angels on the head of a pin over legislation like this. For crying out loud - IT IS NOT THE GOOD GUYS THAT THEY HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT AND THE BAD ONES WILL ALWAYS DO AS THEY PLEASE AND TAKE NO NOTE OF THE LAW.

This is not rocket-surgery here.

Phil,

Here in the Commonwealth, there was some recent legislation that changed the wording of the vehicle carry statute,

From 'glove compartment' to 'any compartment' original to the vehicle.....Of course no permit need.

Open carry of a sidearm (no permit required), anywhere the law allows,
must be 18 years of age for open carry, 21 for concealed licensed carry.

Life is good in the Bluegrass and the Volunteer State ;)

I'm camped 9 miles north of the Tennessee State line......

I enjoy all that both states have to offer to their fullest :D

Every time that there is a new pro 2A law, someone predicts that blood will run in the streets. Somehow it never happens.

That won't stop the semi talented cartoonist for the Times Free Press from drawing something that will slander the NRA and law abiding gun owners.

Wow, way behinds New Mexico and Arizona. Your car has been considered and extension of your home (so concealed, loaded firearms are permissible) since cars were invented. Just takes them eastern states a while to catch up with the southwest.

The citizens of Tennessee are by and large very pro-gun. Many of our state politicians talk a good game, but they do not walk the talk.

I sure don't want to understand their thinking. If I understand it makes me as stupid as them. Larry

The ones I've interacted with seemed to feel superior to a mere civilian. Perhaps it's taught in police school? I don't know.
