More good news from Tennessee

On reflection, what I said earlier wasn't quite fair.

The town nearest me has a police chief who is a fine fellow.

I do find he is the exception rather than the rule, however.

Should police even have the right, as organizations, to have a say in the crafting of legislation they are to eventually enforce?

Isn't that akin to the servant telling the master how things are to be?

Unfortunately, as Adwjc notes, it is unlikely that police administrators will produce "facts" relevant to their opinions that they believe may be/are contrary to the known preferences of their masters. :)

Thanks Phil for the news. Do you know the TCA statute? Not that I don't trust newspapers, but I'd like to read it for myself.

The 2nd law taking affect on July 1, 2014, deals with firearms.

Senate Bill 1774

By Bell

AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 39, Chapter 17, Part 13, relative to the carrying or possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:

SECTION 1: Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 39-17-1307, is amended by deleting subsection (e) in its entirety and substituting instead the following:

(e) It is an exception to the application of subsection (a) that a person is carrying or possessing a firearm in a motor vehicle if:

(1)The person is not otherwise prohibited from carrying or possessing a firearm; and

(2)The motor vehicle is privately-owned.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2014, the public welfare requiring it.

What This New Law Does:

Prior to this law taking affect, if a person were stopped for a vehicle violation by a Law Enforcement Officer, and the Officer sees a firearm that is 'loaded', and the person did not have a Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit, or a Carry License or Permit from any other state, this person might be charged with a violation 'The Intent Of Going Armed'. However, on July 1, 2014, if this person is legal to own a firearm, and it is their personal vehicle, they are legal to carry it loaded. It can be any type of firearm. Conealed or visible.
