quite a while back i started a thread on the Serbu Super Shorty. it got quite a bit of mixed feelings, and some harsh critique... so, instead of buying one, and filing a tax stamp, i passed. I did however just buy the new 590 Shockwave. no stamp as its a "firearm" not an "sbs" or "aow". gotta admit, not a lot of real practical use for it, but i wanted it. who knows, zombies may already be walking among us... recoil is as figured, a bit stout. the grip however is actually quite comfortable. got the opsol minishell adapter, and the lil shorty shells run just fine in it. 100 of them so far without a hitch. i'm thinking this will make a fine companion for the summer road/camping trips with my family. you never know when a snake or rabid beastie may need to be dealt with. i guess its hardly practical, but does serve a purpose. frankly, its just cool and i wanted it. for the record, these are hard to find. i got one with shipping for just under 400 transferred, so not a huge amount of cash. what say you?

I am saving for the Remington equivalent, and the lower power ammunition for it.

I was thinking Remington over mossberg, too, but then I got to thinking about the location of the safety. I think the mossberg with its safety mounted on the rear of the receiver might be easier to access than the Remington one mounted down by the trigger guard. Thoughts?

My reason for the weapon would be room defense or car defense. Great weapon for repelling carjackers, etc.

I am also a faithful follower of Mr Remington's 870. When I got to handle a Mossberg shockwave at the Bill Hicks Show in Minneapolis, I was hooked on the layout of the gun. The Shockwave grip lends itself easily to the top mounted safety. When you put a regular pistol grip on a Mossberg, I can't stand it, you can't get to the safety unless you totally change your grip on the gun. With the shockwave grip, it puts my thumb at the top of the grip anyway. I am interested in getting an 870 equivalent to see how the grip stretches out the hand and how easy it will be to get to the safety.

I don't "need" a small shotgun right now, so I'm going to hold off awhile and watch how this plays out.

Two things make me hesitant-
  1. I don't really care for the safety's location. Might be convenient for use, but it seems like you run a big risk of tearing up the webbing between your thumb and index finger. Hickok45, a guy with bigger hands and a lot more shooting experience than me, has his hand bandaged up on his video due to that issue. I guess I just don't want the only think keeping this from knocking my teeth out to be the meat in my hand.
  2. I also don't trust the various government agencies to just let this pass as a regular firearm. I don't want to get a letter in a few months saying "register or surrender"

I agree, one should be hesitant about using tools improperly. Hickok45 said in the video that he was shooting the Shockwave one-handed purposely with a loose grip. I enjoy his videos and he's demonstrated excellent gun handling over many years, but even Hickok45 isn't exempt from the universal truth... stupid is as stupid does.

I followed the advice/technique in this Thunder Ranch video.

i'm NOT a mossberg guy... my son is named Remington for a reason. if my wife would have let me, his middle name would be 870. that said, ambi safety and 5+ 1 vs 4+1 made me do it. i will further test and beat this 590 to see if it'll hold up. mean time, an 870 with Hogue tamer pistol grip and fore-end will be the go to for road duty...

Is the Remington available yet?

have not seen one as of yet, local or online stores. if i could have found one first, it'd been my first choice. sooner or later they'll figure out how to run shorter shells in it i guess... but that sealed the deal for me.

I was lucky enough to handle both brands a/b at a recent show. Specs aside, which show only a few ounces more weight with the 870, it felt distinctly more muzzle heavy than the Mossy. The easy ambi safety and rearset action release more two of my fave Mossy traits, as I show longarms LH.
