Need some help here . Being a hand gun carry guy only since 1980. Now retired and looking to branch out a bit to long guns . I am looking at a Mossberge 702 plinkster .22 as a start. I am on a tight budget and think that one would get me started. That one would be as name goes just a plinker .I need to stay around that price line. Of $100.00 to $130.00. Any thing else in that range I should look at ?

I've heard nothing good with the Mossberg 702. Look into Marlin XT or Remington 597. For a tad more you can get a Ruger 10/22.

Yes, they are all more expensive but it'll be worth it and you won't be frustrated with your purchase.

I had a 702 Plinkster for a while. Picked it up as part of a trade deal. Its actually made in Brazil. CDC (or maybe CBC?) is the actual maker? Its a fair rifle for the money. The problem is that as it comes from the factory, the trigger is absolutely horrible. Heavy, gritty and very long. Tends to jam when feeding too.
I turned this one into a project. I polished the feed ramp a little which stopped the jams. Worked over the trigger system to smooth and shorten the pull. Put in a Mcarbo trigger return spring. It turned into a very nice little rifle. Quite accurate too once you get the bugs out.
If you like to tinker, this rifle has excellent potential. If not, better to pass.

IN THAT PRICE RANGE.

Used 22 bolt action all day. 22 bolts not exactly being in high demand right now make for good deals. If it's magazine fed, make sure it has at least 1 (AND WORKS) as some older mags can be hard to find & expensive. Take your time & shop around, you never know. I had a used MOSSBERG chuckster 22 mag 1980, not much for quality, but it shot lights out. Marlin might be a good choice & chance of finding 1 in your price range.

Moss Plinkster is junk period.Take $100 to a pawn shop and buy a used
Marlin 60 which will be around same price. $150 will buy used 10/22, both
dependable 22s. I don't remember what I paid for 1st 10/22 in 60s when
they came out. I'm thinking $38, but I do remember paying $56 for the International model when it came out.

There are few modern .22 rifles worth their cost to me. I'm a Marlin fan and have a great number of their rifles in various forms. You can't go wrong with a model 60, 795 or bolt action like the model 25. For the price they shoot amazingly well and there are aftermarket trigger upgrades that take them to the next level!

I just read reviews on the 702 Mossberg and the reviews are good for it. I see some here are saying the 702 is junk though.
I read the 702 costing $111-$125 is very similar to the Marlin 795 which costs around $150 +-. I did read that a 25 round magazine can be bought for the 702 but not the Marlin 795.

I have an old Marlin 60 that has been very reliable as well as accurate but a friend bought a new model 60 and it is a jam a matic big time. Since Remington bought out Marlin there have been many reports of the Marlin quality is gone.
I sort of wonder if the new Marlin 795 are prone to problems also. I think for the price I might consider the Mossberg for under $120.

I just read about the Rossi rs22 for around $111 to $120 that has good reviews also. I think it said the 25 round Mossberg magazines fit it also.

It's CBC, Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos. It's the parent company of Taurus, Rossi, Magtech, and Sellier & Bellot. CDC is the Center for Disease Control. ;)
