Spurred by a conversation today ... What would you consider the most desirable 617?
Not counting special run 617s like no underlug versions, what would it be?
4" square butt 6 shot?
4" round butt 6 shot?
4" square butt 10 shot?
4" round butt 10 shot?
Something else?

4" 617-nothing with flash chrome forged trigger and hammer and original combat grips.

They were 6 shot, square butt and pre-lock guns

I believe there were a few lug-less 617s that may be even more valuable.

For me, probably an 8 3/8" 6 round SB...I think I've seen a 10 round RB but not sure. Who doesn't like a 3 1/2 pound .22 revolver? :)

By observation, however, the 4" 10-shot pre-IL RB (like the 617-4) seems to bring the most money. Perhaps related to some type of competition in which 10 rounds without reloading is better than 6?

Auction ended last weekend for a 6 shot 4" 617-1 with combat grips sold for $1742.17

Well...... I've had a 617-nutting, 4", six shot that I had round butted in the 80s ........ it's my most shot .22 and I have 17s,18s,34s and a 63 along with a "few" autos.

I had it set up as an understudy to my 4" 686-nuttin which is also a custom round butt.

FWIW never understood 8 and 10 shot .22s ...... I don't carry them for self-defense....... so 6 is GTG IMHO!!!!

Without checking production numbers or recent completed auctions, my guess, based largely on dollar amount, would be 4" 617-4 followed by 4" 617-no dash.
This for regular production guns, not limited run models for Ashland, export, etc.

Make that +1 for the no dash four inch. And for the newer ones, the ten shot 617-6 Mountain Gun which no one seems to really understand why it was built or for whom but S&W should have made a lot more of them.

I've had them all at some point. For collecting , the no dash 4" 6 shot SB. For shooting, the newer RB 4" 10 shot.
