Most disappointing add-on part for your M&P15

Well the 3 cheap knockoff carry handle sights. So far all of the Magpul furniture, I found that I like the Tapco shorty VG is the right size. Went with a M4 style quad rail by UTG Pro series, removed the BAD lever also cause my bolt wouldn't lock after last round would do it with every mag I had until I removed it.

My most disappointing add-on was the Magpul SL handguard. And I love that thing.

Liebmeister - welcome aboard. You resurrected a thread from three years ago.

I do question your contention that Millett scopes are made in the US.

Yep, Millett may be an American company, but the box I have says "Made in China". Mine is a red dot though...

I believe that the Millet pictured is a variable magnified and illuminated etched reticle scope typically selling for $200 or less. As a practical matter for mounting on an AR, a cheap dime store optic is a cheap dime store optic regardless where it's made, right? The only useful question is does it fit the intended application. Range toy worthy or hog hunting? yes. Battle worthy optic? no.

Magpul AFG

WOW that's surprising, I love Magpul P-Mags; I must have a dozen of them without a hitch?

What dont you like about them?

PS I also like doing business with the Magpul for telling Colorado to "stick it" with their abusive new gun laws that costs two legislators their seats...out with the Commies, in with the new. They moved to Wyoming.

The AFG, actually the AFG-2 on mine, is excellent. I first tried one on a friend's AR and it instantly felt like the most natural way ever to grip a carbine. Wouldn't give it up.

Most disappointing was a Weaver 1-5x Tactical scope. The FFP design may have a place but on this one in daylight even at full brightness the reticle is pretty much invisible. Returned it to Midway without firing a round with it.

I picked up a UTG Pro hand guard - it was $70. Fit perfectly on my AR, didn't rattle or loosen up, but it was heavy compared to others. Hence the $70 price tag.

Pulled it back off and reinstalled the original M4 style hand guard.

I put a UTG Pro MTU001S rail on my M&P15 Sport. It's not noticeably heavier than the M4 plastic. It's the 'slim' version of their regular quad rail. The side rails are also removable which helps keep it light. I think I paid about $60 for mine and I love it.

I'll tell you what, the most non-disappointing add on is the BCM Mod 4 charging handle. I put that on tonight and holy cow, night and day to the stock handle.

Agreed! I did the same. I will put one on any additional AR I buy.

I'm glad someone resurrected this thread. It's very instructive for some of us guys who are new to the AR world. I barely had enough money to buy my rifle so I don't want to waste more money on products that are well marketed but dont "work" for people.

As some have suggested, you never know until you shoot it, but it's good to see some real critical feedback instead of the usual deluge of cool operator propaganda you get from the manufacturers or keyboard warriors who like to post pics pf their latest build and say "haven't shot it yet but I love how it looks"

For me I haven't done any mods yet, but when I was looking for a rifle I was dead set on getting an MOE hand guard cause I thought it would be so awesome. Now that I got one I'm not so impressed. Wanting to get an ultralight free float rail from Midwest Industries now.

Magpul sl handguard and buttstock. Back to the furniture that came with it. I guess I just had to waste money.

I'm surprised you didn't like the SL handguard. I put one on my middy and like it a lot better than the original MOE. It's been well received by most folks (unless you have a mid-length with a triangular end cap).

What turned you off to it?

Additions

I think of all the extra's I have used to mod my AR, the only on that hasn't been as good as I would like was maybe the "Effin'A" compensator. Kinda cool accessory, could "tune" it to move the barrel any direction I wanted, but just something that wasn't really necessary.

On a different idea in this topic, I use a Magpul short VFG. However, it isn't used where I grab the VFG with my entire hand, rather, use is more as a positioner for my hand, with my hand pulling tight against the VFG to bring the rifle into my shoulder. Also use it as a monopod when supported. Happy with that.

Other accessories also work very well...... Aimpoint PRO, (love it!!!), Tactical Link battery assist lever (Like the MagPul BAD lever), and a few other goodies.....

OK, last post was only partially serious. This is the real deal for me.

The worst accessory for me has been any scope I've ever bought that cost less than $350. All of them have been functional, but terrible when it comes to any kind of real accuracy. The best I could get out of any of them was 2MOA. That's obtainable with iron sights.

I had that same HG and the screws that came with it where way to short to hold the rails onto the HG, so when I install a vertical grip or used my UTG bi-pod it would loosen up real bad. On the front section of the HG the screw holes got stripped out cause even the slight recoil of the AR wiggled the screw right out of the wholes. I even used blue loctight 242 and still out come loose the screw where only going in about 1-2 threads.

It's been two two years since I replied to this thread. I've learned a few things since then. What was the most disappointing add-on to the 15-Sport I owned? In retrospect, every piece of furniture and heavy handguard I added to it. I turned a nice lightweight rifle into a heavy pig. If I had it to do over again, I'd have left the stock furniture on the 15-Sport. The only modifications I'd do today, in order:

  • Aimpoint / EoTech / Trijicon
  • RRA 2-Stage Varmint Trigger
  • Fail Zero NiB Full Auto BCG
  • AR-Restor Hydrauic Buffer
  • Smith Enterprises Vortex Flash Suppressor
  • Damage Industries Silicone Wire Buffer Spring
  • KNS Precision Anti Rotation Pins

Keep the stock furniture. Keep the stock front A2-F sight post/gas block. Keep it light.

One way to save money and avoid disappointment is to not buy sorta-kinda-as-good-as stuff before you buy top shelf. You knew you wanted it to begin with, but you didn't want to spend the money... blah blah blah... we all been there.

IMO, the two must-have are optic and trigger.

There's a variety of top-shelf optics as Japes listed. Aimpoint micro and Wilson Combat TTU trigger on my AR. Yeah, they cost about $1,000. But it would have cost more if I bought cheap stuff just to later replace it.

After doing quite a bit of reading, I've now convinced myself there is a third must-have item for a carbine gas system-- adjustable gas block. A Syrac Ordnance Gen II arrived in the mail today. When I get around to installing and testing it I'll let you know if I still think it's a must-have or a not.

Follow up-

Had the opportunity to test the Syrac adjustable gas block on my YHM carbine. Very happy with it. Significantly reduced recoil. Moving off target between shots has been reduced by half. My rifle was over-gassed from the factory, hitting very hard and brass was about 1:30-2 with M855. I had previously installed a Spikes ST-T2 heavy buffer that had helped a little. I'm now going to take the Spikes out and put back the factory lighter buffer.

Installation was straight forward as with any gas block. Tuning was quite simple because Syrac makes the adjustment screw with a spring detent, so it holds position every quarter turn. No need for a secondary screw to lock in place or Loctite. Just click into position and that's it.

My rifle shoots so much softer it's like a different rifle.
