Motel Invasion !

Guntownuncle,

The examples you give are exactly what I had in mind. I don't intend to be a victim, particularly as long as I live in Louisiana or Texas while not working overseas. Louisiana and Texas law both allow the use of lethal force to stop an assault upon one's person, or against someone else. Texas law is specific concerning stopping the theft or destruction of one's property, particularly at night. A drunken hoodlum jumping up and down on my vehicle, at night, particularly when I am accompanied by my wife or sons, is in the free fire zone, just as a car load of people who suddenly decide to advance upon me after they have forced me off the road, is likewise in the free fire zone. If the survivors turn around and run off I will not continue firing at them, but as long as they are advancing, and there is more than one, they are in eminent danger of termination with extreme prejudice.

My wife and I were in our room at a motel in Lake Tahoe when someone tried to unlock the door. I said I have a gun and if you come through the door you will be leaving a hell of a lot quicker.
Seems the motel booked the room twice. What bothers me the most is if we were not there all our stuff including said handgun would have been gone.

Over 45 years ago I got in a fiasco in mexico, first one than another 3 guys came in my room to rob me. I still wont go in the details, I am alive. Probley doesnt count on this thread as it was mexico!

Happened to me: I got a key from front desk and when I opened the door a black guy standing in this room naked just grapped his handgun! The idiot front desk guy gave me the usual "I´m sorry" - but I could have been shot this day.

Simple answer: never go into California, and at your first chance get a non-resident CPL in Washington. Very simple reasonably rapid process. I also made the effort, long before needed, to obtain a collection of non-resident carry licenses, starting of course with Florida. It has made my life a lot easier when traveling. We also have big dogs, and I have done most of my traveling over the last 10 years with my rott. When I started taking him to prosecutor training a few years ago, I made a up a sign which said "Work Dog. Do Not Enter." in 3 languages (English, Spanish, and German, because of the place we do most of our training), and tape it to the room door. I get odd looks and questions, but more important, I get left alone.

I dont know why everyone is so parnoid by going around or not through certain states. I am right at 68 years old, well traveled and maybe lucky. Just put the darn gun in your trunk or luggage, go in the motel!
I worked/lived in california, packed my 40 years there, and never went to jail. Due to accidents or whatever I did have to explain myself about 3 times over the years. Maybe things have got worse since I left there 4 years ago. The only places I have left a gun home was when I went to canada or mexico.
But then again I never was a hippie, tatooed, or wore long hair etc. Unless you dress like a freak, mind your own business, just how many times in your life have you been shook down anyway? I just dont see the big deal!

Glad things turn out well, RKO. I could just imagine how happy you must've been when you realized that you had your arsenal with you in the motel. I guess that's what you call years of traning.

Stay safe.

Try that in Chicago and need to use the gun. The Illinois legislature had to pass a special law just to protect residents who use a gun to defend themselves or their families IN THEIR OWN HOMES in a town with a gun ban.

At one time, race was a big determining factor in whether you'd be popped for carrying without otherwise committing a crime, but that's apparently not the case any more. The CPD isn't going to protect you, and they're going to move heaven and earth to make sure you don't protect yourself either.

I have to go to Chicago once a year. I don't carry when I go, and believe me, I feel VERY naked driving relatives around Chicago on Christmas night without a gun.

Avoid Chicago if you can. Don't bring a gun if you can't. Everybody ought to know the consequences if you get caught. If you survive a criminal attack by having a gun, your "protectors" will do what they can to destroy you anyway.

Jun,
You are absolutely right. I went from the despair of thinking that with only a five shot
revolver, no extra ammo, and no light I was not going to be able to deal with at least three or more violent people, to a feeling of relief, and almost exultation, remembering the Glock with its attached Glock light, 8 high cap mags, one 30 round mag, all stoked with NATO 124 grain solids (made to penetrate) and a back-up SureFire light. It was almost as satisfying as
getting a double double (four shots, two shells in a Browning O/U and two in left hand) on Philippine Mallards (Anas Luzonica) at Pontabongan Reservoir.

Take care and stay in touch.

I wrote this somewhere else. In 1962 or 1963 I was on a trip driveing from texas to wisconsin. In or on the outskirts of chicago I stopped for supper at a diner. I came out and had locked the keys in my 56 chev. After some febal attempts in the dark of trying to hook my keys, I stayed at a nearby motel. The next morning I was trying to still hook the keys out with no success. A handfull of people were watching and trying to give me advice. One looked through the window and said look at that big gun he is carrying! Sure enough, my revolver had slid from under the seat and was in plain sight on the floorboard! I just said, hell yes, everything I own is in the car!
The guy that spotted it was a preacher and drove me to a dealership and I got a ring of keys to try, and that worked. He wouldnt take money, so I finaly gave him some telling him to put it in the collection plate next sunday.

Were the same thing to happen today, you would certainly lose the gun, probably the car, and possibly your freedom.

Where was your Hi Power????????

Back in about 1976 I was in los angles with my young girlfriend driveing my old 64 coup deville. Two wetbacks pulled out of a bar and T-boned us. I only had liability ins on the old cad. They ran. I told diane to chase them so I could get the plate number. That was a mistake! The girl instantly turned into that actress that played police woman, whats her name? Angie Dickinson, thats it! Anyway off to the races we go! They went on the freeway for a short ways, her hard on their butt. They could have out ran us as he had a hot I think, mach 1. However, he abrutley turned on the next off ramp probley thinking she couldnt make it, but she did. I swear what happened next you all have seen in a dozen movies! There was some sort of parking building with the wood arm down. They knocked that off, and entered with the black parking attendent diveing for cover! She followed them in, they turned into a dead end and came squalling back at us and rammed us a couple more times as she now was backing up. I was hollering for her to stop and let me handle things as my side passenger door was rammed shut from the original accident where we got T-boned. They went on to the next level but spun out. Before I could stop her she said I am gonna git those bastards and intendiay broadsided them! I bellered for her to get out, as I slid across the seat to her side I saw my S&W model 60 had slid out from under her seat to the floor and grabbed it up. I went up to the driver and ordered him out. He had locked himself in and wouldnt come out. I got mad and hit his window with the gun, of course it didnt break. So now he did get out and said, hey man, why the gawn? Can not we settle this without gawns? This was too much for me and I couldnt restrain myself and said, yeah! With that I knocked him for a loop. Now the other guy got out (with diane tugging on him!)
He started telling me stuff like I wouldnt be so beeg without my gawn etc. Again I lost it and did a stupid thing. I said, here diane, hold this, and walked over to him. His eyes got big and he kept backing up kicking at me as I advanced on him looking for my chance.
Then I heard diane say, one more step and I will blow you away! I looked and seen the driver that I had coldcocked was stupidly advanceing on her. She was standing with the gun in both hands aimed at him! Now, I had already had taken her out and taught her to shoot! I walked over and took the gun from her, and told her to go find some cops, which she eventualy did.
I stood there with those guys telling me how they was gonna find me someday and kill me etc.
Also they were trying to come up with a story to tell the police when they come and trying out different versions with each other. I had them stand about 15 or 20 feet from me and showed them the deadline. Then waited there with my gun in my hand in my pocket on them. Presently, I saw two guys casualy walking like they were going to kind of walk past us. I called over, you guys security? One said yes. Then I could see the butt of his revolver sticking out in his pants where he had put it for a crossdraw under his sports coat. (my job was also security, and somehow, you "just" know.) I briefly explained the situation, told them I had a gun on them, and that police would be arriveing, then I said I want you to take my gun until we sort this out, and handed it over.
The police came. And came. And came. I think I eventualy counted over 20. I havent seen more police cars except on tv covering a police funneral. The first cop put a shotgun on me which I fully expected. Patted me down. They hooked up the two guys, but not me. I shortly asked one why they didnt hook me up too? He said your demeaner, which I really had guessed.
They took us to the down town L.A. station. Had to fill out paperwork etc, for a number of hours. Turned out the driver had warrants out for him, not sure what for.
Finaly they took diane and me to see the watch sargent. There was a discussion as what to do to me. Finaly the sargent eyeballed us for awhile and told the cops in a mock mad voice and said put him in jail, and take barney oldfield there in with him! I seen a cop or two smeerk and I knew what was comeing down. Diane didnt. They drove us back to wherever she had parked the car, turned around and gave me my model 60 back, and handed me the ammo too!
I forgot to say, that at one earlier point that night they had ME OPEN AND UNLOAD THE GUN! as they couldnt! Remember when I hit the window with the gun? I used to handload my own ammo. I lived in the dessert and always put one bird shot capsal cartridge up under the barrel for rattlers. When I had hit that window it had jarred the shotshell forward into the barrel locking the gun up! I was or could have been dead and didnt know it! Remember that if you also have been doing it!

Keith, glad it turned out all right for you. (And looks like you took the Boy Scout motto to heart, thankfully!)

Feral, dang! You've sure got some good ones.

A close friend shot a killed an armed robber at a motel in Columbia, SC, a few years back. My friend went out for ice but had his Hi-Standard .22 2-shot derringer in his pocket. When confronted my friend shot the bad guy once in center mass. My friend's buddy came out of the room and put two .45's in the guy as well. They also cornered the bad guy's accomplice and held him until the police arrived.
It was a justified shoot. The bad guy had a Marksman BB pistol, a Colt 1911 look-alike.
Two lessons from this:
(1) Any gun is better than no gun for self defense. A hit with a .22 is better than a miss with a .44 magnum.
(2) Don't bring a BB pistol to a gun fight.

CJ,
While I occasionally visited Subic Naval Base,
to which Olongapo was adjacent, it was for
BX and Commissary shopping, or liaison visits with the NCIS, one of whom had been my student years previously. So, I do not have a store of
Olongapo stories to incite the more righteous of the Forum. However, Angeles City, just outside Clark AFB, was an area where I did have a certain familiarity. These stories I only disclose to close friends of known reliability
over a few San Miguels.

As to where was my Hi-Power?, please remember that I was driving a truck, albeit a very luxurious truck. I would not routinely use a T-Series as a truck gun.
