I want to change from stock 625 mountain gun sights changed to red ramp and white out line just like on my 629. Is this a do it yourself project or will I need a gunsmith to do it?

Swapping out the rear sight will be no problem, but if your front sight is a patridge, it will need gunsmithing. The original front sight is integral to the barrel forging.

I'm thinking there is a pin beneath the ramp. Could the sight be pinned or is that for something else? If it is indeed pinned is that a do it your selfer?

If it is pinned you can handle it. The new sight will have to be drilled, but other than that, no problem. I believe the Mtn Gun front sights are taller than the standard 625 sight. Check for proper height before you order. Tim

Thanks a bunch for the help guys.Might just try it myself.

I just changed mine. I called S&W and asked them what to use. They said a .160 white outline rear, but didn't give a height on the front. Tell them what you are wanting to do and they will give you the right stuff. Mine shoots great after I changed the sights. Make sure you have a #54 drill bit for the front sight. Total cost was about $38

Thanks a lot. Glad it works so well. I'm definitely gonna give it a whirl. Did you order the parts from Smith or somewhere like Brownell's?
UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Smith and they said the rear sight was .106 ( not .160) and the front was .296. Next they said if I sent the revolver in for a master revolver job, they would install both front and rear for me for ,I believe, $42, $30 for the front and $12 for the rear.
Then when I asked if I could buy the parts he said Smith didn't have any front sights that high....go figure...

I ordered mine from Smith & Wesson. I told them what I wanted to do and the lady said they don't make a red ramp sight that high, so she got the tallest front with the red ramp, and the difference in the height she added to the heigt of the rear sight to make it even out. She asked me if the gun shot accurate, and I said yes. They sent me a .160 rear sight, but I'm not sure what heigt the front was. After installing the sights it shoots fine.

Thanks..Tried them again and they are sending a .160 rear blade and a .276 red ramp front. I'll get a #54 bit and be in business.

You will be very pleased, I know I was. I don't know why S&W didn't do this on the Mountain Guns in the first place.

You will also need a small pin punch (0.050-0.055") to remove the front sight pin. Brownells carries them, but you can easily make one from a 1/16" pin punch by chucking it up in a drill press and reducing the diameter with a file. Work slowly to avoid heating the punch up too much, and check diameter often. You only need a reduced diameter section 3/8" long.

I also recommend using heavy masking tape around the sight, sight base, and barrel while doing this. Punches slip occasionally, and the tape will help prevent surface damage. It goes without saying that the barrel should be immobilized in a properly padded vise for this operation.

Fit the new front sight lug into the ramp slot - it should be a tight fit. Install the sight into the slot with red Loctite and let it set. Using the hole in the ranp as a guide, drill the sight lug halfway from one side and halfway from the other. Try to keep the bit straight to avoid enlarging the ramp hole. Put some red Loctite on the pin, and carefully drive it into the hole. Again, use masking tape to avoid finish damage.

This was something I wanted to do as well. I saw this thread and it got me motivated.

The front sight on my Mountain Gun measured 0.296". I called S&W and they confirmed this measurement. They said the PN for the Red Ramp FS for this measurement is 21940.

I turned down an old punch I had to 0.055" and easily removed the original pin & FS. I followed haggis' directions and used red Loctite on the new RR FS and clamped it in place while I drilled it from both sides with a 0.055" drill bit. Then put the pin back in and presto!

Couldn't have been easier. Thanks guys!
