Mountainguns

The most desirable? .....for me, the 41 Mag.

The most sought after (brings biggest $ at auction) the 45 Long Colt.

Just my opinion....but, I love my 41 Mountain Gun.

Personally, I would vote for the .357 - the .41 and up are big and heavy even with the short tapered barrel and probably need to be due to recoil, but a lighter .357 (no underlug, like a standard 686) seems to be a good idea.

.45 Colt for me. The Mountain Gun platform is pretty light and IMO, not suited for the .44 mag. I've ran loads through my 25-13 Mountain gun that ranged from light cowboy loads all the way up to "John Linebaugh loads" that are pushing .44 mag territory. These upper end loads aren't real pleasant to shoot and I can't imagine a .44 mag Mountain Gun would be either with full power loads.

Of the ones you mentioned...................

I know the barrel marking is hard to readon the stainless 625MG

These are 45 Long Colt

The 625 Mountain Gun in .45Colt is harder to find (made in 1996 ONLY), and usually commands a higher price at auction than the 629 MG in .44Mag. Unless you handload, the 629 offers the greatest variety of ammo to shoot, from light .44Spl Cowboy loads to all out .44Mag hunting loads. The Mountain Guns are wonderful revolvers. I have three, a 686+, 629 and 625. They are pictured below, L to R in that order. The 7 shot 686-4 may be THE most sought after, as well as the 625 in.45ACP-also VERY difficult to find......

Same here! Let mine go in a moment of stupidity. Gonna be hard to replace it.

I purposefully sought out the 41 mag mountain gun by choice. Thankfully that gracefully and most completely sated my lust for them other calibers.....

This topic has come up before,

You can probably filter GB and see which ones sell for the most money if thats what you are looking for,

The "Mountain Gun" concept IMO is a lightweight revolver of sufficient caliber to stop any unwelcome critter that might threaten your life yet small enough in size and weight to carry when in a place where lighter is better (backpacking).

I chose the 629-2 "Mountain Revolver" in 44 mag.
My reasoning: Ammunition availability when traveling, pre lock forged parts, No MIM, No IL .
(top) with Model 66 for size comp.
Truth is they are all great guns and you should choose the one that suits your needs best.

45 Colt...wish there was a .46 Colt

625-6. Yup

I have a 29-8 Mountain gun in .44 Magnum. The recoil is stout, but manageable. I could shoot .44 SPL, but what's the point? If you want a .44 Mag, you have to get used to it. If you can't get used to it, get a rifle.
