Moving to the Gulf Coast of Florida - A few questions

Maybe someone can help me out with some answers. i am moving from Pennsylvania to Florida. I am trying to find out what I will need to do to get my CC permit transfered or renewed for Florida. Also, will there be anything different on the laws about owning firearms and hi-cap magazines. Just trying to find out what I going to encounter.

You cant have your CCP transferred, but the process to apply is fairly easy. They are backed up right now, expect a wait about 3-4 months. There is safety course you have to take, but you may be able to substitute your existing CCP for that, not sure.

As far as gun restrictions: none (except for following NFA laws)

Once you have your permit you can buyt a gun at an FFL and walk away with it that day, until then, 3 day wait for handgun, some counties also have a 3 day wait for long guns, but not many.

Also, private sale here does not require an FFL

No gun registration or other nonsense
 
Actually, military vets are not even required to take a safety course, just supply a copy of your DD-214. I also was told that if you go to a regional office of the dept. of agriculture (the issuing agency) it greatly speeds up the process. Good luck and hurry on down, the water temp in the gulf is finally above 80!:cool:
 
As Seagill said active/retired do not need to take the safety course (proof of service proves you are capable of and were taught proper gun handling) You have to make an appointment with Dept. of Agriculture you go in fill out basic background check info and then wait. Mine took two weeks (this was in late 2011) my wife is still waiting (besides a couple paperwork errors its been 6 months still nothing)
 
Everybody has pretty much covered the basics for a permit but here are a few other pointers. There are bugs in Florida. I'm not talking about just outside. In Florida, you will have bugs inside no matter how clean you keep your house. For outside, a .410 is usually adequate for mosquitoes. Other things, if you see an old man in hat driving while looking through the steering wheel of a land yacht, give him a wide berth. Same goes for white haired woman looking through the steering wheel. They either think they own the road or can't see worth a darn and are just aiming, hoping they don't hit something. The Gulf Coast of Florida has a few unspoiled areas left, and it is all beautiful country, traffic in St. Pete is a nightmare when the Canadians are down for the winter, if you can, stay away from the bigger cities and opt for one of the unspoiled areas,above applies if you are not moving to the panhandle area, not much left there that isn't developed, but still a very nice area, just a different atmosphere.

show up with $, not in handcuffs and have a pulse and you're good to go. don't wear any "yankee" sports team hats or Tee shirts. a wad of tobacco in your cheek, a sister that is also your daughter, barefoot and pickin a banjo is a +. they don't keep records of guns you own, so don't offer to show and tell.

He didnt say he was a vet, so I didnt mention that, but then again also, I didnt notice his Army thing on his profile, so good point.
 
I have found that checking with local, independent insurance agents are a good place to look for insurance-somewhere close to where you live. Also-AARP (the Hartford) may cove you if you can't find someone local; you will have to join AARP though!
 
Getting Insurance is not a problem unless you live very close to the coast, or in one of those sinkhole prone counties like Pasco or Hernando.
 
Thanks folks for all of the pointers. Some of them had me laughing out loud. My fiance keeps telling me about the bugs. Also, we will be living in Lakeland, just west of Tampa. I will have to find a good shooting range around there somehwere. We are leaving Pennsylvania on June 4 and heading south.
