I bought my Grandson a MP-15 22LR back in the early summer. And he loves it! BUT! he's wanting to put a aftermarket Buttstock on it, I don't have it at my house or I could probably figure it out? Is the recoil spring tube the same size as a reg AR-15? He wants some sort of Magpul Buttstock? Or does it have to be a specific one for his MP15-22?

will any aftermarket buttstock fit it with NO modification's?

THANKS in advance for any Help or Info!

Yes, aftermarket butt stocks work, however, make sure you get a MIL SPEC butt stock, not a commercial butt stock. The buffer tube is a MIL SPEC size tube.

Thank you so much. I didn't know! I'd seen listings for both types, but didn't know the difference in mili spec and commercial? Now I know! And I didn't even know if the MP15 22 used or had anything in common with a full sized AR.

Thats why I love this forum!

Thanks again!

The 15-22 can accept MANY items made specifically for their big brother:

Trigger/Hammer
Butt Stocks
Optics
Handguards*
Muzzle devices [suppressors, flash hiders, muzzle breaks]
Pistol Grip
Ambi safety selector

There are some items will NOT work, however, there are after market alternatives designed specifically for the 15-22:

Charging Handle
Bolt Catch/Release Lever
Anti-walk hammer/trigger pins

Then there are things for which there are no 'direct' alternatives/replacements:
Folding Stock (note - some people have cut off the existing buffer tube and then, through various fabrication, installed a LAW Folding Stock)
Barrel
Upper Receiver
Lower Receiver
Barrel Nut

*Note, to swap out the handguard, you need a special barrel nut converter, sold by Tacticool. Also, if you want to remove the barrel (for cleaning or swapping out the handguard), CLAMP THE BARREL, not the upper receiver. There is a specific tool (you can purchase or make) that will allow you to loosen or tighten the 15-22 barrel nut.

Welcome to the insanity!

Hi.

No such thing as a dumb question.

You should never be afraid to ask if there is something you don't know.

Case in point, look at the great information you have received as a result of asking.

Brilliant. :D

One thing nobody mentioned, is his buttstock pinned? If it is you need to remove the pin before you are able to remove the buttstock. Just thought i would mention that.
