Just got a new M&P15 C5.56 with a cheap 6.7 sport handguard.I want to install a bipod but can't with this handguard. What would be a good handguard to replace the one that came with the gun?

Depends... do you want free float or drop in? Do you want quad rail, MLOK, or Keymod? What is your budget? Too many to list...

I'm in the same boat as the OP, altho I specifically want to add a quad-rail that's a drop-in.
What are the options for that??

Tons of options... prices can range for $30 for UTG, up to a couple hundred for Knights Armament. Just Google "drop in quad rail" and find something you like in your price range.

There are a lot of drop-ins that are much better that a quad rail, quads have more rails than most people use and really dig into your hand. Actually a standard milspec plastic handguard can be fitted with a lower rail attachment so a bi-pod can be used.

I nust installed my Christmas gift of a magpul MLOK slimline for my sport 2. It was a PITA to install, but I like it. As the slim line extends the handguard to wrap around the A2 site ramp and mimick a mid length.

I now have the freedom to install almost any attachement with MLOK or conversions for MLOK.

So now I have to go look for front grip, front sling and lights to increase the comfort and versatility! Thats what makes this fun! Let the games begin.

Same thing as Sport II?There are bipods/adapters which mount to the bayonet lug and/or to the circular openings of your handguard. Does that handguard have those cooling vents (holes)?

Barnshooter:
Yes mine has holes,7on the top and 7 on the bottom.

However, good ones like my KAC have rail covers that stop the hand mutilation. My KAC is solid as a rock, even as a drop in, maybe the best out there. Expensive, but great.

That's why they make angled foregrips ;)
Slap that on the bottom and that's where you grip!

If there's one thing I learned in the Army...it's that a Sling is the most
important doohickey you can have on a rifle. Makes it far easier to carry!!

My vote is for the basic Magpul with Mlok. I have one on my Colt M4 and have placed railed sections where I need them, including the bottom, which I use for mounting a vertical grip or bipod. To my eye, the Magpul has a nice, clean look that's different from the traditional forend.

Here're before and after pictures of my M4 with the Magpul Mlok forend.

Example of what I was referring to if you're wanting to minimize costs:

Having researched the bayonet lug adapter, I'd stay away from that choice. Most opinions I found indicate a sloppy fit. I have a Tip Top brand on a 20" AR which is mounted the same as yours would be. Mine is the 6-9" model which has 1" notches running the length of the legs as compared to the version which has the smooth legs. It's excellent. I really appreciate the "pivot & pan" features. A couple of other features are a tensioner to tighten both pivot and pan and a spring-loaded button to automatically extend the legs. Well built and good value for the money. Perhaps shop around for best price. Series-7N Notched Legs EZ Pivot & Pan Hunting Rifle Bipod | Peleton Technology

I guess that begs the question of the unknowing...
what accessories are Mlok and are they any less expensive??
Are Mlok attachments any better than quad-rail??

Perhaps not any better but I'd say they're as durable and stable. A benefit of the M-LOK system is you can add assorted length rails sections along the sides, top / bottom as needed yet still enjoy the smooth and normally smaller diameter hand guard surface. Has more utility and ergonomics than a quad. Especially beneficial to those with hands and not hooves or paws. No lesser number of accessories and very cost effective.

Mlok and Keymod are just newer systems for handguards that are ergonomically better and more technilogically advanced with the attachment systems. I would'nt say they are stronger or cheaper, it's just newer technology and easier to work with and more comofrtable to hold in general.

Hi,

I myself decided to change the poor handguard for something more aesthetic but above all more complete and ergonomic. I opted for the AERO precision handguard, the ATLAS S-ONE. For now, as my barrel is a 16" and I chose a 15" handguard, I have to change the frontsight and the gas block. The elements are on order and the installation will be done next week for sure.

I've turned to the M-LOCK version because I sincerely think it's the new Black.

The quality is really well done, so I also bought the Picatini features to attach a MagPul angle handle and later a bi-pod. To replace the original BRAVO M16 frontsight (this operation is mandatory to install a 15" handguard), I turned to a flip Up model from UTG as per the pictures bellow.
With this customization, I can use 3 different types of sights (without disassembling) according to the distance, my mood of the moment (and thus the difficulty) and well the rules of competitions: open sight, red dot sight, red dot sight with Magnifier (Vortex Micro 3x STS)

I used a lot FAMAS at the army, for sure this AR15 platform is a lot more fun to customize!!

Here are some preparatory pictures of the future evolution.

I hope my explanations will help you.

Denis.
