I dropped the 9mm storm lake barrel in my M&P 40 fullsize with the 9mm magazine and it runs like it should.
My brother has the 357 sig barrel and that also works fine with the 40 magazine.

Check out these videos below. I was thinking about ordering the same Storm Lake ".40 to 9mm" conversion barrel for my M&P 40c. The guy in this video does the conversion in a M&P compact but it seems good to go. From what I've read, make sure you order the ".40 to 9mm conversion" barrel from Storm Lake... not the regular 9mm barrel.

Yes, you can put a factory 9mm barrel in a 40S&W slide. You'll need at least one 9mm magazine to go with it.

That's true from my experience - if you can find one. I got my 9mm barrel from Midway USA almost exactly one year after I put it on back order. I think the Storm Lake barrels availability is better, but they cost more. After I got my S&W factory barrel, it fit very well in my FS40 slide. I used a FS 9mm magazine that I have for my M&P9C along with an X-Grip adapter. I've read that you can use the FS40 magazine, but will probably have cycling issues, particularly in the last couple rounds. The FS9mm magazine worked like it was supposed to. I haven't shot it a lot in 9mm, but all I have, have cycled perfectly so far.

Keep an eye on ebay. There were a couple of factory 9mm barrels there last week. One sold for $65.
You might also call S&W directly to see if they will sell you one, but don't tell them you are going to put it in a .40 slide and there won't be anyone there until next week.
