MP9C

I am a new shooter and just purchased a MP9C. The only self defense ammo my dealer had is +P. Is if safe to use this ammo in my MP?

Welcome to the Forum. I would strongly suggest you read the owner's manual.

“Plus-P” (+P) ammunition generates pressures in excess of the
pressures associated with standard ammunition. Such pressures
may affect the wear characteristics or exceed the margin of safety.
Use of “Plus-P” ammunition may result in the need for more
frequent service.


“Plus-P-Plus” (+P+) ammunition must not be used in Smith &
Wesson firearms. This marking on the ammunition designates that
it exceeds established industry standards, but the designation
does not represent defined pressure limits and therefore such
ammunition may vary significantly as to the pressures generated
and could be DANGEROUS."

^^^^What he said^^^! The only time I use +P ammo in any gun is .38+P in my .357 snubbies...I just see no reason to pound on my stuff. If a person wants something with more "power" it's time to move up in caliber.

But your question wasn't asking that was it? 9mm ammo has been available in most places as of late so sorry that you're having trouble locating some. If you use a commercial range they should have it but can't comment on the price they may ask. IMHO I would pass on the +P and wait for standard 9mm but it's your call.

Welcome to the best forum around for all things S&W. I have a 9c and use 115 gr FMJ for practice and 115 gr.FTX Critical Defense for self defense. After shooting the 9c you will find it to be a great pistol.

+P ammo

Thanks for the answers to my ammo question. Think I'll hold on the +P for emergencies and stay with standard ammo the rest of the time.

I bought +p initially and have recently decided to just go with standard. So my plan is to shoot the +p at the range just to get rid of it - any excuse to shoot at the range!

The OM spiel is typical lawyer stuff. The PF9 is much less robust by comparison, but even Kel-Tec says it will withstand +P in limited use. I think the M&P will do just fine with +P ammo, as long as that's not all you shoot for thousands and thousands of rounds.

That said, for civilian use, I don't really see the point of going 9mm+P. If I want more power, it's much easier and safer to get a .40.

If you are LE and the dept mandates 9mm only, then maybe you would want to practice with regular ammo, then carry +P, like 38 special and 357.

+P is fine for defensive rounds, as long as your not training with them while doing 1000 rounds sessions.

It "may" cause more wear. This has yet to be proven on the M&P platform. *that I know of*

Training with defensive ammo WILL cause a dent in your wallet though.
