Educate me. Was the checking on the top strap done by machine or by hand? Its a nice touch, but not aware of why it was done. Function? A hold over from the RMs?

The 627/627-0 was the first stainless in the 27 family, and the last to receive the real checkering treatment on the barrel rib, top strap and rear sight tang.

The top-strap and rib checkering of the .357 Magnum/Model 27 guns was/is done by machine. The back/fore-strap grooving on the grip frame is also by machine on all models having this feature. It is strictly a "dress-up" embellishment that has the added benefit of preventing glare from those surfaces.

And the expression is "much ado", not to do.

Thanks Alk, my fault but went to collage and skipped the lit courses.
And spelling. Aint gots to talk good in engineering classes. If it cuts glare, why not apply to service revolvers?I awat corrections to my rightin.

Not sure how they were checkered, just know it's classy and I like it!

Just a personal opinion.......

The top strap checkering in question was something that did and does set the .357 apart from every other model revolver that followed including the .44 Magnum & the .41 Magnum. I believe the checkering made it unique and presented a much more prestigious status. My thinking was that the .357 was the "Flagship" model of the fleet at one time. Mind you, I Have never had anyone in a high position with S&W confirm this so....it's only an old man's opinion.

Thanks Sam, most logical explanation I have heard. Never did buy that anti-glare checking on the top strap. If it was that good, why not apply it to the service revolvers that was S&Ws main source of income.
