re the Beethoven 9th:

I sang this as a 2nd year music student back in 1972 with a "cast of thousands and live sheep in the balcony", and I don't think I've recovered vocally since. The second half of the concert was the Bruckner Te Deum, another huge shout-fest. The poor sopranos had to sing a top C at the end. Great music, but it's left a permanent knot in my vocal chords.

It's my favorite piece of music, but I've never had to sing it.
