For all those who are WWII history folks this upcoming movie is a must see. (see the link) One night only in theaters on May 23rd. Hopefully it will be in a theater near you. 36 reels of never before seen footage shot by William Wyler's crew in filming original WWII Memphis Belle was found in National Archives and turned into a movie. Can't wait. Many of us in our 60's onward had Dads and Uncles in WWII.

I started college, in Memphis, in 1961. Driving around near Memphis State, and passed a National Guard place.

The Memphis Belle was on a concrete slab, out front.

No fences, crawled all over the plane, still in nice condition.

I'll be watching for it, thanks! My great uncle flew B24s. Never talked about it much.

Watching the trailer and seeing the wind whipping the collars of the flight suits reminded me of one of the things my father-in-law, a B-17 waist gunner, told me near the end of his life. He said when you went to town, you could spot the guys who were on flight crews - they had a frostbite line on their faces between where their goggles ended and their oxygen masks started. I can't imagine functioning at 40-60 degrees below zero with a 175 mph wind coming in all the openings, especially the early waist gun stations with no glazing.
VaTom, thanks for the heads up.

There is a book called "Masters of the Air" by Donald Miller that is absolutely horrific it's description of the bombing campaign. Those guys had "huevos grande" to climb in, day after day, knowing the chances of them completing their 25 mission requirement were about nil. I read that it may be the basis for another mini series on HBO in the future, one that I look forward to seeing.

HBO is supposedly working on a 10 part mini-series as a companion work to Band Of Brothers and The Pacific called The Mighty Eighth, based on Masters of the Air. This one will also be a Spielberg/Hanks collaboration.

Its been in development since 2013, so it may never happen.

There is a fake trailer out there, made up from clips of a low budget film about a B-17 crew. No actual trailer has been released.

Thanks for the heads up, I'm looking forward to this one!

I was fortunate enough to get a ride in the B-17 Aluminum Overcast a few year ago. It was a humbling experience that gave me a new appreciation for the men that rode them into battle.

Many don't know that "The Mighty Eighth" lost more men in the skies over Europe than the entire Marine Corps in the war. Plus many POWs. Our heros! My late Dad served in supply on the base of the 452nd BG.

I’ve heard that before. Kinda gets you choked up when you think about it. That scene in “Memphis Belle” in which the C.O. brings out the letters really gets to me every time I see it.
