There's a lot of choices out there. I've got a Lantac. It reduces muzzle rise remarkably well.

I wear ear protection while shooting so don't notice any but a brake is going to be a bit louder. Mostly louder for those who might be on a shooting line with you. No flash signature during the day, some at night.

In general with brakes the shooter does not hear or feel more noise but I can guarantee that the shooters to your left and your right do.

Breaks almost always deflect the blast and the gasses to the left and right keeping the muzzle flat. This is not really an issue in a defense situation except if you are working in a group in CQB.

I have used a few but in the end settled with the BCM Mod 0 comp which is a compromise between a A2 flashhider and a comp. It is sort of a jack of all trades and a master of none but it works for me.

Once I got my first muzzle brake I knew I was never going back.

Stoner designed the barrel to be in line with the stock to help reduce muzzle rise. However, when mounted properly, this in-line system is still above your shoulder. Thus, the toe of the stock being in your shoulder creates a pivot point and thereby causing muzzle rise.

Muzzle brakes are not all the same. Some are better than others. I have one of these on my .308Win RPR:

It works great.

I have one like this on my .223Rem AR:

It works pretty good too.


The more gas pressure there is, the better the brake works. The .223Rem generates about 55Kpsi at the chamber. This leaves enough gas pressure to operate the bolt carrier group and have enough left to give the brake enough to be effective.

I have a Precision Armaments brake on my AR-10, on my AR-15s I tend to go with the Jerry Miculek style brake like the second pic Rastoff posted as they are cheap and very effective, but damn are they loud for shooters around you, I've found a good compromise to be the Strike Industries J-Comp which is what I use on my primary 223 rifle now.

Oh damn how have I only heard about this muzzle brake? It's made from aluminum so won't add uneccesary weight to the end of your barrel, and you can mount a laser, some backup irons, an extreme forward verticals grip or even four bayonetes depending on how tactical you want to be. All that for less than $30!

Has great reviews on Amazon, I'm ordering 12 for Xmas

M&P 15 Sport A2 Muzzle Brake for Flash Hider?

Question: On the M&P 15 Sport (Original) is the OEM part an A2 Muzzle Brake or a Flash Hider/Suppressor? I will need to replace the OEM part if it is considered a flash hider/suppressor, as opposed to a Muzzle Brake. We in the oppressive People's Republic of Kalifornia now have to make our AR's "featureless" in order to not be required to register them as Assault Weapons; which in Kalifornia since 1989, can never be sold, transferred or loaned and are destroyed when the original register dies. Also, to have a Flash Hider/Suppressor on your AR after 12/31/17 would be to have an "evil feature" on your unregistered AR weapon and a felony. I think it is a flash hidder/suppressor...does anyone in Kalifornia know for sure?

It's a flash hider, so it has to be removed to go featureless.

Picked up the comp I ordered on Monday, and weather finally allowed a trip to the range. After 5 years of drought, wasn't too upset about the delay trying it out. So far, like the way it works. No noticeable change in feel at the shoulder. However, I'm back on target quicker with cross hairs closer to original point of aim.

There sure is a ton to choose from. Curious where you heard of the Synergy and decided on it?

Was in a small shop near the house that I like doing business with. Place is owned by a Vet,jarhead type, and is a good dude. He had a couple of AR's that he had built on display, that had the Synergy installed. Since I'm going featureless, so I don't have to register, I was interested in the comp. Liked how the Synergy looked mounted, and liked the idea that it's melonited stainless. So, I had him order me one.

Only put about 50rds through the comp and so far so good. Visual inspection on arrival looked good. No flaws in the porting or finish. Color likes to be a real close match to the barrel. If I went back to shooting USPSA, would use the Synergy if I shot 3gun.

When I worked for the guh-ment we tried out compensators on our M4s. They made our rifles easier to control when firing sustained full auto, but the flash was unacceptably bright. We were taught to just shoot pairs when on full-auto, anyway; something that is easy to keep on target without a comp. Soooo...we just stuck with the standard flash hiders. Now on our Barrett rifles, we left the muzzle brakes on...

It also the volume of gasses generates. A 308 has the same gas pressure as a 223, but the volume is is more. My 223 uses 25 grs of varget, while the 308 used 44 grs of varget.

I use a VG6 Epsilon High Performance muzzle break. Big difference in muzzle rise and recoil. As a side effect the amount of side pressure/blowback is quite a bit more but the follow up shots are nice and tight.

How do you think a muzzle brake works?

It the gas volume being redirected by the brake that makes it work. The more gun powder that is used the more effective a muzzle brake will be.
