Muzzle loader sight in ?

I have a 24" barrel with a 1 in 28 twist. I will be pushing a 223 Powerbelt bullet with a 150 grain charge. The rifle is scoped. I want to sight in at 25 yds. How high at 25 should I be to take full advantage of the trajectory and where will it be printing at 50, 75, 100, etc (approx)

I'll leave these calculations to someone in the Understanding Engineers thread. Although I've found that those numbers might get you close, where you're really going to hit with your exact setup isn't going to be concrete until you actually make the shot.

I'm guessing this is a 50 cal rifle. Your 150 gr of black powder is rather excessive for BP. You would be better off going to a heavier bullet and backing the load down to 100 gr or less.

As to your sight in, 25 yds should put you on paper @ 100 yds. You are going to have to shoot at each distance to be sure. What kind of MV does your rifle produce with this load?

IMHO, the beauty of BP is throwing a large hunk of pure lead at a modest velocity. My load is 430 gr of pure lead propelled by 100 gr of BP. 10 shots will stay on a playing card @ 100 yds. with iron sights. Never had to track a deer shot with this load.

Sorry, Yes it's 50 cal. This is a 3 pellet load.

If you want to work up the most accurate load for your rifle you probably are going to have to lose the pellets. (Unless you are very lucky.)

i sight my 50cal in using a 270 gr power belt and two pellets of triple seven magnum powder to impact right on, center of target at 75yds. this sight in reduces hold over and under to a minimum. shots beyond 125yds with any load are iffy in my opinion.

Sighting at 25yds isn't good enough if you plan on shooting game at longer ranges. You really need to sight in at 100yds minimum. I suggest 100gr powder charge and a heavier bullet, but that's your call.

Sounds like my load: 100gr GOEX Black Powder behind a 430gr TC Maxi-Hunter out of my .54 cal TC Scout. No tracking required.

I got on a muzzle loader site and found out that I need to back off to 100 grains with this bullet and possibly go even heavier.

Haven't gotten into the muzzle loader thing much. Borrowing this rifle for the MO muzzle loader season and this is the load the owner was shooting. I'll go 100 grains of powder (2 pellets and a 223 or 295 Powerbelt)

Welcome to the Smokey Side! With that light of a bullet I fully agree that 100gr is plenty. And if you get further into muzzleloading (which I am almost certain you will, it's addictive), keep in mind that this type of propellant is much different than genuine black powder. For instance if you used 150gr of my Goex authentic black powder you would probably blow up the gun!
