My 22's Just Got Reamed*****( See Post 32 )*****

I just got reamed out myself a week ago, but that is a WHOLE different story.;)

I am lucky when it comes to .22's, with both my K22 Combat Masterpiece and my K22 Target masterpiece having easy ejection. My 18-3, on the other hand will get stiff in just a couple cylinders full. That one will end up being sold though, since it is now a extra.

It sure is nice when you don't have to work at it, nez pas?

Roughly how long per gun did it take you?
When I did mine, It took closer to 1/2 hour each. All three of mine had at least one chamber so tight, I could not insert a even a new cartridge without really, really hard pushing. I do believe if I fired the tight chamber, I'd damage the gun trying to extract the fired brass. See how much swarf is on the reamer only halfway into the chamber?

Looks like my experience with reaming the chambers of my 18-4. Took a few hours to ream all six chambers. Lots of lube and the reamer got clogged with shavings and had to be cleaned and reinserted several times with each chamber. There is no excuse for S&W shipping a new gun in that condition.

Makes you wonder how it made it past test firing?

My 17-3 and 34-1 both need reamed badly. I got the ream and heavy cutting oil (1 quart) from Brownell's (I had a tap handle that worked already.) It took me about 5 to 8 minutes per chamber. For both guns i used about 1/2 cup of oil.

I have a "Clamp on" bench vise. I put that on a B&D Workmate over a thick layer of newspapers. I trimmed a cake pan to wrap around the vise (like the bed of a lathe) and put several rags in it, to absorb oil. I had a very large pile of filings!

Don't know current pricing, but in the 90's local gunsmiths wanted $60 a cylinder for this Job.

The guns all went bang just fine! But at the mothership you got paid by the piece! Extraction was somebody else's job!

My F-I-L was an Armorer for Columbus, Ohio PD. They had a batch of Model 10's in the 60's that half the guns were never finish reamed and wouldn't chamber a 38! They didn't return the guns, but the Department back charged for all necessary smithing. All those old-time armorers were trained at the mothership.

Glad it worked out! REAMER LOANER OFFER!!

@Pete: Glad it worked out for you! Now you can leave the hammer and wooden Chinese chopsticks out of your range bag when you take your S&W 22's out for exercise.:D

A few days ago there was a Member from France on and he found the Manson reamer at Brownells in France for 185 Euro which is $210 USD! I see both Midway and Brownells are out of stock on this cylinder finisher reamer here in the States. I cannot recall but I think I paid around $50 back in 2016/2017 but that included shipping and some sort of tax too.

Anyway..........If any Members of this Forum need to ream your S&W 22 LR and have a vise, soft jaws, a tap handle, and some cutting fluid and feel they want to do this job by themselves....I'll be happy to send the reamer to you free of charge with the condition that you agree to pay for postage and send it back to me after you are done. It cost me $10.00 to send a USPS small box priority mail to Pete, and it may cost you less via USPS regular, I don't know but I want it sent back to me, so I can send it to the next person needing it and that way I keep track of it for all of us.

These used to be a "Forum loaner" floating around and last I heard years ago it was in NC but maybe has moved on...I don't know.

Anyway....let me know via PM of your name and address if you need the reamer, and I'll get it sent once Pete sends it back to me.

My guess is that in never got test fired. My experience with firing it was as above posted. Trying to chamber rounds hurt my thumb. I used a short section of round nylon dowel to force rounds into the chambers. I quit shooting it because I actually wondered if I might compress the rim enough to fire a round trying to chamber it. As I said, no excuse for it to have been shipped in that condition.

Mine were not that bad, but the last 1/4" or so was a hard push after a few rounds and got worse. Shells drop in now, and fall out by tipping upside down

I don't own "Soft Jaws" for my vise, I use scraps of leather.

My reamer came from Brownell's and was dull by 10 chambers, I called them and the sent a replacement for free it arrived within 48 hours. The second ream is razor sharp after a few more chambers and touching up the first 10. I wish I could come up with a way to touch up the M82 Kimber chamber. The radius in front of the rim does not fit the Federal Target ammo I have thousands of! (Fits other brands just fine!!)

The S&W chamber problem is so common, that the correct ream costs much less than any other ream!

Remember: NEVER TURN A REAM BACKWARDS!

Wow, that's just bad!

I've got a couple of rimfires that probably need a finish reaming.

Thanks to those who took the time to answer my questions! :)

That's a very, very kind offer of you!

However, my luck would be I borrowed & used it, then sent it back & bought another .22 a month later. :D

I'd think a tool like that would be best (for me) to be purchased to ensure I'd never need it again............ :D

Hmmmmm I wonder what a man might want for a shooter grade 18-3 which obviously needs work ?

When I was doing my apprenticeship, we had product called Tap-Magic. It was for use on steel and as the name implies, for tapping holes. It didn't take long to figure out it also worked great for drilling and if used for reaming, the holes looked almost polished. It's still around today, but the formula was changed back in the 80's and it's no longer near as good.
