My 28-2 Refinish job by S&W - WOW!

It is quite a bit shinier than the one I saw today. The price seems reasonable tho. May I please ask how long they kept your gun? Did you have to pay in adance or after they sent you a quote?

I mailed it to them and it took about 2-3 weeks before they got to it to assess the revolver. It took a little over 8 weeks or so for the actual work to be done... after they sent me the quote. In total, I believe it was mailed to them in the latter end of March, just received it this last week.

You have to pay in advance before the work will begin.

Looks great!!! Pistols / S&W's are like Harleys. Do whatever YOU want to them to make them run good, fit you and look good and as long as you're happy heck to the rest if they don't like it.

Carry that sucka with pride. Safe Queen's are unhappy Smiths IMO and need fed some powder and taken care of afterwords. I like shooting mine way more than wiping them down and putting em back in the safe.

You did great! I have had S&W reblue a gun that was already polished blue, but the returned gun was 10 times better! They do outstanding work now days. I'm even thinking about having them polish my 25-7 and re-blue it. Yours looks great before, but even better after. Enjoy it!

Looks fantastic to me! If you would pull it out at the range I would think it was a 27!

I saw a 28-2 six inch at the shop today that looked to be in excellent condition and really wanted it! I began to wonder if it had been refinished since it did not even have a cylinder turn ring? I mean no visible mark at all. The price was $429.

If I had the money, I would have snagged that 28-2 for $429... seems very reasonable.

The "Dr. Saxon Pig Lesson On the Economics of Gun Re-Blueing" should be a sticky at the top of every gun sight on the internet.

That way we could ALL ignore him simultaneously.

Your 28 is GORGEOUS...you absolutely did the right thing.

Oh, and, for what it's worth...I bought a 28-2, had it gone over and reblued by a member of the Pistolsmith Guild and then sold it after a while...and I didn't lose a penny on it.

dutcher987, your 28 looks great. I too had the S&W P.C. refinish a revo to make it a nicer shooter. It was a 1966 Utah Highway Patrol M27-2 3.5" that was functionally and cosmetically challenged. After its trip through S&W I now have my FAVORITE shooter. My grandson will enjoy it in another 17-18 years.

I think it looks great too and I would do the same. In the end all that matters is you like it. I'd be very proud to take that gun to the range, its a beaut!

Uh.......... Guess I should have asked more than $600 for this ??? Shoo

It is just about $225 shipped, I believe. $185 just for the bluing. It was very reasonable in my opinion.
That gun looks outstanding and that price is indeed very reasonable. I think I'll have my -2 reblued as well, though I don't want them going over the gun or messing with it other than the bluing.

Forget it then. A quality reblue requires COMPLETE DISASSEMBLY and a ground-up rebuild. I doubt that S&W would do a reblue without doing whatever else was needed too in the reassembly process.

I'm with Gordy, the factory will replace and/or repair any other issues the revolver may have. I think it's a good idea.
Who would paint a car with an engine burning oil or the wheels about to fall off?

+1 Agree on the re-hab…
Before: unsafe to shoot-

Reblue

Is it true that S&W will not refinish older models?

I am curiouse if the factory applied any stampings under the grip , yoke or cylinder that indicate the gun was factory refinished and if they
stamped the date it was refinished?
If so can you post pictures of them?

I have two S&W factory rebuilt and refinsihed model 36's,
One is blue, The other is nickel.
I could tell they had been refinished by the factory when I purchased them by the stamps.

The factory did such a great job it did not matter to me that they had been rebuilt and refinished.

I would expect a factory refinished gun to be a cut above a gun that was refinished outside the factory.
Unfortunately this is not always the case and thats where a keen eye comes in handy.

Obviously it requires disassembly for reblue. Of course I understand that, I just would rather things like the trigger pull and such not be changed if at all possible.

I think it makes a difference if the old imperfect finish came from your handling or not.
I had a Winchester 20 gauge model 12 that was well worn from many quail hunts with my Dad. I sent it back to Winchester for a reblue and although it looks nice, all those memories of the two of us are gone from it.

I think that refinished 28 looks fantastic. I've never understood the fetish for original, crappy, finishes. As the pool of older Smiths dries up, nicely refinished guns will become the next big thing.
