My 29-2 is Coming Back From S&W

I bought this 4" blue specimen from a good friend in October and it had a very minor flaw, which I will describe tomorrow when the gun gets here. Rather than fixing this little defect myself I called S&W and they said send it in. Because of it's age it went to the Performance Center because that's where the skilled craftsmen still reside. I got a call Tuesday afternoon from the fellow who worked on the gun. He was obviously very happy to be able handle this early 70's 44 magnum and went over and above what I had expected on the high condition revolver.

This is probably not SOP for S&W and I think the customer service rep. I initially talked with may have over committed himself and the repair section. With a FedEx label in hand I hustled the gun off for shipping. I will post pictures and more when it arrives tomorrow.

My 29-2 came back from Springfield a better gun than when I sent it off. The front sight insert was so loose it was about to fall out. I know that seems easily fixable at home but I wanted it done right. While the timing was good he wanted the cylinder to carry up and lock a bit earlier, so, a new hand. The yoke/side plate screw was OK but new screws all around were installed. The action on this thing is as good as it gets in an early 1970's revolver (N140xxx).

Aside from some minor muzzle wear and very light handling marks this came out of the factory better than it did originally.

Did they install the longevity package? They used to do it gratis, but I'm no longer sure. I have a 6 in. M-29-2 that I have considered sending to them for the upgrade. If I could get your accommodating craftsman, I might do it.

The original parts came back with the gun. He had mentioned fitting a cylinder stop but it was not in with the rest of the stuff. BTW, no date code stamped on the grip frame. The sight insert is perfect.

Man, that is beautiful. There is just something "right" about a Model 29 with a 4" barrel. Heck, any 4" N-frame, but especially a Model 29.

Mine is a -10 and not in the same class as your beauty though.

I worked in the Service industry for 42.5 years. United Parcel Service to be exact. 4 months to get a revolver back is too long. 6 months to fix a revolver is poor service, no matter what is being repaired. This isn’t rocket science. If only one guy is working on revolvers, he needs help. Whatever the one guy knows can be passed on. They could do better if they wanted to.
