I'm told that 38 auto is loaded to a higher pressure and in deference to the age of the gun would recommend only the correct 38 S&W. Also,m the 38 auto rim is much smaller and will not always extract correctly from the revolver.

I am of the same thinking use correct ammo so you don't unintentionally hurt that fine old revolver . You did good getting it thanks for shareing with us.

Nice 3rd Model. I have a Blue one in similar Condition. Definitely .38 S&W Ammo only. Personally; I would only use Handloaded ammo with about 10gr of FFFG Black Powder and clean it thoroughly after use. Starline make the Brass and Speer and Hornady both make HBWC lead in .358 which will work fine and save you a packet. It's a 130+ year old Gun that wasnt made for Nitro Loads; BP will be much gentler of your ole girl.

Just my 10 cents worth.

Im still trying to figure out what 38Auto is?

Might be .38 Super. Or this, 38 Auto or 9x23mm SR, is a semi-rimmed pistol cartridge that was introduced at the turn of the 20th century for the John Browning-designed Colt M1900.

Last time I asked for .38 Super for my Colt Commander, the young clerk at the local gun shop handed me a box of .38 Special +P.

Hi There,

I really don't quite understand this thread. The OP wanted to
show off his recent acquisition of a S&W Safety Hammerless.
Nothing wrong in that but I can't help but wonder where the OP
got the idea that he/she can use ".38 auto" in this revolver?

Most of you seem to have more sense and have tried to steer
the OP towards using the appropriate ammunition (.38 S&W)
and the correct propellant type (Black Powder) but so far, there
are enough people contributing to the ".38 auto" side that I'm
sure it is confusing to our new member to know which way to
go.

Cheers!
Webb
