I bought this back in the early 80's. All I knew then is it was a genuine S&W .44 mag. Later on I read that S&W only made a limited run in the 8-3/8", which is what mine is. My question is that mine is not in the serial number range the Blue Book lists, by a mile. Mine is pinned and counter bored. My serial is N850XXX. Blue Book shows around N62XXXX. I know Smith doesn't ship in order but 200,000? Can anybody pin down a DOM?

Acorn, I have an 8 3/8"er serial number N838xxx. The best date I came up with for mine when I bought it (and with the help of the forum) was 81. The SCSW says the dates for N8xxxx was 80 - 83 and did mention very few were fitted with the 8 3/8" barrel.

Are the stocks original to your 629? Currently mine has cut out GA targets but through the years I’ve switched them around so.... I have a spare set of relieved walnut targets and may swap them out. I can’t remember what came on it.
I did a double take, I thought you stolen my gun!;)

I bought mine new in '81 or '82. Serial # N841XXX. I think it was manufactured in 1981. The original blue lining dissolved along time ago.

The first or prototype Model 629s had serial numbers in the N629000 range. The first production revolvers started in 1980 at serial number N748564 with the first 4 and 8 3/8-inch revolvers starting at N778000. The Model 629, all barrel lengths, was made for approximately two years before being replaced by the Model 629-1 sometime in 1982.

I have a 6 inch with serial number N749008 when doing the math it comes out to be the 444th one made which I think is kinda cool for a .44 :) …………………………………………...M*

P&R 629s

Just to add to Doc44's post, there are 629s out there that may be pinned, not recessed and vice versa. This is commonly the result of an engineering change. I have examples of 4, 6 and 8 3/8" barrel 629 no dash revolvers which are P&R. I have no idea how many were made.

Since it was mentioned about "parts clean up during transition," here is 629, no dash, #N87559x with recessed chambers and NO pin for reference.

I figure possibly late 1981 production?

Y'all take care, Bo

629s?

The unusual 629s are the ones with the pinned barrel, recessed cylinder, and an "N" serial prefix with the 4" and 8 3/8" barrels! The reason being is the dates of the practices of manufacturing.
1980 629s released to the public (6" guns)
1981 4" and 8 3/8" introduced
1982(approx) Changed to "ABC" serial numbering system and the 629-1
engineering change took place(dropped the P&R)
Here is some data from a factory letter from Mr. Jinks

629 No Dash

Mine, which is in excellent condition and in its presentation box, has 6 80 stamped on the left grip and the serial #is N777894 which coincides with the aforementioned information.

The barrel is pinned and the cylinder is recessed and is 6" long.

I used to carry one like it back in the '80's while hunting for Elk (and in Bear country) in a ******* Rig. Unfortunately, that one was stolen from my home. But I knew I had to replace it which I did some time ago.
