My ’66 GTO was stolen and destroyed. Update post #70

Some folks just need...a beating...

Not a car, but my scooter was stolen from my driveway. Called police, got a call back saying it was found about two miles away. Looked as though they took a baseball bat to it, tore out the ignition, put sand in the crankcase, stole the battery and my helmet, smashed all the lights out. It was totaled. Kept photos of it for a while, then got rid of them. No one was charged to my knowledge. The prime suspect, in my mind, got his comeuppance a few month's later, shot to death in the middle of the street in a hick town in the central valley over a drug deal. No tears here.

Jbob- sorry about the car, if you do get it restored have them install some kind of an ignition cut-off, so the car can't driven without the cut-off being deactivated. There are some pretty sophisticated systems out there. Good luck with the resto.

..oh man...that really hurts...

The 66 was my favorite GTO.... A friends parents had a dealer demonstrator 67 with an automatic and three duces...nice car.

Sorry for you loss and hope they can find out who did it....

Bob

Very sorry to see that.

On the plus side, you didn’t get car-jacked and were not in it when it wrecked.

In 1954, someone stole the fender skirts from my '51 Mercury convertible. A week later, the car was stolen and I thought I'd never see it again. The cops found it the next day. Nothing damaged. The glove compartment looked like it was cleaned out with a vacuum cleaner. Everything gone; even the dust.

Being a car guy, and taking my Corvette to car shows, like you my first car from HS was 1966 GTO, bought brand new, Coupe all the options.
Looking at your dream puts a tear to my eye, have had the fun of owning and driving years ago.

When ever I see a 66 GTO at cars shows I think back to mine, and now I'll be thinking of yours.

They called it tri-power

Couldn’t have been a tri-power in ‘67. They switched to the 400cuin motor with Rochester Q-jet at the beginning of the ‘67 model year.

I had a brand new 67 GTO and the above poster is correct in that it came with a 4 barrel Rochester! Sorry about the OP loss but it looks to be restorable!

Somebody get a rope! Terrible thing to do to that classic, especially with your family history with it. A friend has a '64 convertible, three deuces, 4-speed, etc. It's pretty much original, and he bought it when he was in high school in the 60's. Hate to think how he'd feel if it was stolen.
There must be replacement parts out there now, especially if it shares components with Chevelle or Cutlass models. We wish you the best in the restoration.

I have been thinking about this all day after learning of this early this morning. I know that becoming attached to material things is futile, but I can feel the pain of your loss. I am reminded of the movie Doc Hollywood where his Porsche is totaled. The old boys said "We can fix that". If you can buy it back from the insurance company it would be a good project to repair for your soul. Best wishes.

Why would he have to buy it back from an insurance company? Insurance companies don't take posssession of someone's property simply because they have to pay a claim on it.
