My Character Flaw - UPDATED

The sad thing about any addiction, be it cars or women or whatever, is you can't really enjoy them if you have too many. It's actually more enjoyable to have fewer of them. You should start an interest in the books you like reading, on the subjects you enjoy the most. There are so many great books out there from settling the west (A Terrible Glory), colonialism (Anglo-Zulu War), police officers/Texas Rangers (Nothing Left to Prove/I'm Frank Hamer), mafia (Five Families, Murder Inc.), sports (football - Ken Stabler, boxing - Jack Dempsey), geography etc. Everything you could possibly want is out there. And throw some bible study in while you're at it.

I imagine my list is quite similar to yours. To think of some of the weapons that I just had to have. Many were collectibles that I found I couldn't really enjoy shooting. A beautiful piece of history that I can't use without worrying about diminishing its value takes the fun out of ownership.

I take these pieces and trade for something I think I'll enjoy actually shooting. I then run up on something else that I've always wanted and the cycle repeats.

I see a few firearms that I don't really like, but I don't see many I don't want!

I was the same about trucks too. Up until I bought a 2004 Ford F-150 4 X 4 that I drove off the lot for $25K I averaged trading every 20 months. Dealers would bring up extended warranties and I'd tell the "I won't have it that long."

If not for the Ford being destroyed by one of my grandchildren I'd likely still be driving it today.

There's not a single day goes by that I'm not thinking about trading, selling, buying, or all the above.

More often than not I now reason myself out of whatever it is I'm pondering at the time. Oh, I don't have to have any reason for making a move. Sometimes it's a matter of scratching an itch that I don't know even know I have.

"Collecting" . . . "Accumulating" . . . "Acquiring" . . . "Hoarding" . . . people have interests - who knows the wherefore and the why? A lot of eggheads with fancy degrees that make a very good living analyzing things like this in others by only guessing or applying generalized observational methods with no real proof or concrete facts are rarely questioned, 'cause, after all - they're 'doctors' - they tell you why and even though a great portion of the time they know little or nothing factual (try to pin them down and watch the back pedaling and gyrations of rabbit hole explanations to justify their guesses) they're given deference and respect for all their 'knowledge'.

Well, I can play . . .

As a self trained analyst I diagnose mine as a deprived childhood where I wasn't given everything I wanted and the preponderance of 50's and 60's television programs consisting of WWII combat shows and movies, Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett shows, cop shows like "Highway Patrol", "N.Y.P.D.", "Adam 12", "The F.B.I.", "Hill Street Blues" (and on and on) as well as movies with Sam Spade, Peter Gunn, Mannix, Kojak, . . . and western horse operas from the likes of John Wayne, Richard Boone, Steve McQueen, James Arness, Chuck Conners, the Barclays and the Cartwrights and scads of others . . . and Cold War spy shows, both serious and send-ups where all of the above often prominently featured fascinating firearms as main characters.

Whatever deep-rooted obsessions and compulsions afflict us humanoids, I find the above all more enjoyable than collecting buttons, the 'spoons of all 50 states', thimbles, or Hummel or Willow Tree figurines, or whatever some folks tend to 'collect'.

In times in the not-so-distant past homes were not built with a lot of closet space because people generally had a set of work clothes and their Sunday-go-to-meetin's which could alternately be hung on the nail on the back of the bedroom door when not in everyday use. Nowadays we own so many clothes and shoes we need to build on to house all that stuff.

So my "Official Diagnosis" and prescribed course of action for you, Quickdraw67, is you're completely normal (at least in that respect, since I don't know you personally you may be crazy as a bedbug :)) and you shouldn't fret about this particular issue. I further prescribe more range time and the association with similarly afflicted neer-do-wells as found here on the S&W Forum. We're all here for pretty much the same reasons . . . . "Hello ! I'm NFrameFred and I'm an addict". :p

We all look at this differently. Even though gun interests change over time, one or more may remain constant for many years.

I've had an intense interest in several gun areas over the last fifty-sixty years. Rifles chambered for many wildcat cartridges took up a decade or more; T/C Contenders with multiple frames and barrels lasted a few years as did AR-15s. Not to forget lever-action rifles and Winchester High Walls. I suppose there were other forgotten gun interests.

I no longer hunt with cast bullets and never did hunt very much with them, but still enjoy bullet casting and shooting in many rifles and all handguns as I've done for many decades.

After buying a variety of lesser guns (usually because of price) years ago and doing a lot of selling and trading at the same time, I quickly found that spending a little more and sticking with brands like Smith & Wesson, Colt, Winchester, etc. is well worth it in the long run. Having good quality guns that hold value well and are always desirable and easy to sell or trade on the used market has been the best way to go for me. Same with scopes and accessories.

There comes a time when the "wants" aren't as strong and sentimental value wains. You think about what you might want to do with a mess a guns no one in your family has an interest in. It's great fun taking a bunch of them to a large gun show and selling at fair "non gouge" prices.

Except for two work-related commemoratives, I never quite understood the safe royalty thing, but am not a collector. I shoot everything yet keep it all in good shape.

Trips to the range have changed. I prefer to take one or two guns now and concentrate on shooting well rather than hurriedly trying to shoot too many guns at a mediocre level. Handgun shooting is now almost always bullseye style at 25 (sometimes 50) yards. This certainly helps with skills, even if you revert back to shooting with two hands.

Character flaws
Fred, your frank, sincere, self-analogy, closely mirrors my views. Especially those concerning 'doctors'. It's truly apparent, that we attended different schools together, and that our parents, somehow, must have compared and shared their wealth of knowledge.

I'm admittedly a collector, accumulator, acquirer, hoarder, and addict, like you and many others, on this forum.

Considering my physical/mental condition, at age 91, the time to thin out my stuff has arrived. The gumption to do it, was lost in delivery, and I'm still waiting for it.

Now I've got an awesome problem, and food for thought; How best to please my heirs in the thinning of my 'stuff'.

I'm tempted to just enjoy my 'stuff', while I'm above sod, and leave my heirs to settle things when I'm below sod; Decisions----------------------------------------!

For a minute there I thought I authored the OP!

There's a whole lot worse character flaws one could have.....

Very relatable

quickdraw - your thoughts on the subject are very relatable. Have always been tinkering, tweaking and changing my mind to get the best line up of firearms for me. Don't have a list as long as yours but I've got quite a list all the same. Like you I've settled in a bit but have something in mind that's Kinda hard to find. May pounce if it comes along.

Well. I won the auction. Now I have to pay for it.

I'll be listing some things in the for sale section in the next day or so.

This has got to stop.

Heh heh.... We're just here to help! :D It's almost as much fun spending other people's money as it is my own.

Please post a picture of what "we" just bought . . . .

My charicture flaws

It's confession time; In retrospect, I've had much time to contemplate my caricature flaws, and have a blatant character flaw to add to my list. I'm a hypocrite. I spend much of my time condemning the thoughts and deeds of others, and ignoring mine.

To put this into prospective; At 91yrs., old, I've had plenty of time to study my flaws. My bountiful blessings are very apparent to me. The list of them, is mind-boggling. I don't want to seem a braggart, but, honesty, compels me to make this truthful statement; No one that I'm personally acquainted with, has received as many blessings as I have. People that haven't been as well blessed, as me, will probably consider my statement, a lot of malarkey.

So be it.

Those that are honest would have to confess much the same here. When I contemplate that there are still many places in the world where folks live in a mud hut and subsist off a hand full of rice each day the abundance of material blessing here in our nation is glaring. Add to that security, freedom, the personal blessings of home and family and a plethora of ways and locations to worship as you see fit . . . . it boggles the mind.

I'd challenge those who read this to simply walk around your home and take stock of only one simple thing we take for granted. At a quick count I have at least a half dozen convenient locations where clean, safe, fresh water is available to me 24/7/365 just with a few steps. That there are folks who walk literally for miles in some areas of the world each day for a precious ration of whatever water is to be had should be a sobering reminder of the things we take for granted.
I guess that's why those who denigrate this nation rile me so badly - I invite anyone who has a problem with it to emigrate to some other utopia. Those who hold those views, in my opinion, usually place their faith in the wrong things, and the wrong people. Each breath and each new day are blessings that will not last here forever.

That such trivial pursuits as gun collections or sports obsessions that have so much time and money available to be enjoyed like this is abundance. We make jokes about it but we truly are a fortunate people.

Thus endeth the sermon ;)

Don't know how old You are so I can't give sage advice. If it were Me and the shiny new was something I just HAD to HAVE I would sell enough to get it. I am 77 and don't shoot all I have now, and don't hunt anymore either. Oh, I did quit counting flaws decades ago. Let none spoil the fun.

Caricture flaws

It's confession time again.

This one is a bit more complicated. Instead of having the twos like some folks, I have the "G's", I.E., I'm Querulous, Gripe, Growl, Grump, Grumble, grouch, Grieve, gimp, grunt, Gyp, Gap, Gloat, Gag, Gawk, Goose, Gloat, goad, Grin, Gibber, and Grab.

I'm nearly incorrigible.

Complete thread drift here.

Isn't "incorrigible" what happens when you're surrounded by a pack of corgis?

Yes, I'll be here all week. Bad puns? I consider that a sign of an active mind. Grasping at straws, perhaps, but active.

You remain shameless, and I'll remain incorrigible.

I enjoy a good thread drift. If the thread is lite enough, it'll float for miles.

Spelling and pun intended.

Bantering betwixt Friends, can be fun.
