I had an awfully crazy dream last night. :) Fully color, hi-res, long and very real & detailed. ;) I wonder what I ate, drank or did yesterday to bring that on?

Anyway, the reason I am posting is that in the dream, my paternal grandfather (long R.I.P.) appeared in it carrying a stainless steel 3rd Gen similar to a 3913, 6906 or 5906 (I couldn't tell which, but it was ambi safety) but it was in .22 LR.   I actually watched him load it and shoot it so I know. :)

No, it wasn't a 2206 or a 622. Not even close. It was a regular, short/mid-barreled (not 5"), centerfire-style, stainless 3rd Gen. I woke up shortly thereafter thinking: "How amazingly cool was that"!?! :D

I think I have figured out my first totally unique 3rd Gen project gun!!! :D :D :D

Has this ever come up before... ... i.e., the idea of converting an everyday centerfire 3rd Gen to .22 LR??? Permanently or via a "kit"??? I can't find any discussion about such a project or conversion kit anywhere using Google.

I'm only going to pursue this idea with my local gunsmith if I'm truly the first one to do it! :) No sense in breaking new ground just to find out that someone else has already dug there. ;)

So what says the team? :) Good idea? Unique? Or just a waste of my fast shrinking IRA and my last few remaining good years? :p

Chasing a dream... hard for someone else to label it a "waste" but it would be extremely difficult to pull this off, really. When you consider the mass of a typical 3rd Gen slide and the fact that nobody makes a .22 cal barrel that would come even close to fitting a 3rd Gen slide...

Even small gun manufacturers tend to source their barrels from a manufacturer who makes barrels specifically-- and they are only able to do this on a contract basis for many hundreds or thousands.

"Dream" is actually a very good term for something like this. It would almost be like crafting a one-off prototype and the cost would be extreme.

Yeah, I hear you. :o I understand the technical challenge. It surely wouldn't be cheap.

Funny how there are conversion kits available for 1911's, Glocks, Beretta 92, Springfield SD's, etc... but none for 3rd Gens. :( How the heck did the 3rd Gens get left out?

I even own one for my Beretta 92FS... and toyed around with the idea of getting one for my Glock 17 too.

I guess the bottom line is that if no one has made one for a 3rd Gen yet, it probably isn't going to happen... by me or anyone else. :(

Not something I'd care to pursue, as I have no use for .22 caliber. But when it comes to chasing a dream, I am a past master...if you're inclined to do it, Banzai!

For such a mainline business doing business, in my humble opinion S&W is a little weird. They make a big to do about tradition & such, but they dump the 3rd Gens to chase the dollar with the poly pistols. I know that they are trying to make a profit, & of course we don't know all the factors involved, but I will always think that halting 3rd Gen production(at least, to the public!)was a major mistake. Even Coca Cola realized that they screwed up with "New Coke", & brought back the original.,

While I agree quite a lot with that... let us not forget that S&W went through some very drastic ownership changes and tradition and marketing aside, it is a FOR-PROFIT business. And the masses (today) demand tupperware, and that's LE and civilians.

Traditional DA/SA (the bulk of our beloved 3rd Gens) are simply not... not at ALL what the market demands.

I would even argue that the M&P line wasn't the greatest threat to the 3rd Gen line -- I might suggest that the 1911 pistols were.

I just recently bought a 5906. Beautiful weapon and well made. I own a couple of .22 semi-autos and I just can't see a .22 LR cartridge generating enough thrust to push that heavy stainless steel slide back far enough to rack another round.

The 1911 conversion kit I have has a whole new slide assembly, with a lighter slide.

When this happens, you should probably take a few days off from the Forum- or at least just hang out in the :revolver" section for awhile...

That being said, the 1911 conversion kit I have is one of the best buys I ever made. That thing makes me look like Sgt. York.

I have conversion Kits for a Beretta 92 and a Ciener for a Browning HP.

Neither are bullseye guns but fun to shoot....... a .22 5906 would be a hoot to shoot!!!!

Always a surprise first time you rack the slide on the Conversion kit.....with the light spring and alum/alloy slide.......

TTSH...... great idea.....

that conversion for the 59 way cool...looks like it modeled on/works like a......Model 41

Oh come on Pete! :p It was a great dream, hi-res and everything! :D And tell me with a straight face that it wouldn't be totally cool  to own a stainless centerfire-style 3rd Gen in .22 LR! ;)

Until you start thinking hard on the technical challenges and likely obscene cost, it's a great idea! :D

There ya go! :) So why not one for a 3rd Gen too? :D

In this dream, by any chance did the spent .22 shells hit you in the forehead? Then I would know it was life-like!

They did not! ;) There is a lot of detail in such a long, full-color, hi-res dream like that I am leaving out so members here don't think I've totally lost it. :p No, nothing kinky but trust me, it was a .22 LR stainless 3rd Gen he had and not a 2206 or 622. :D

Hmmm. Now you've got me wondering... I wonder if it was a limited edition PC special?  ;)
