A year ago I acquired my first Model 57 4" and it turned out to be first year production. It's taken me this long to acquire three more early Model 57's. The two lower ones shipped in April and May 1964. I am waiting for the letter on the upper right blue but it has an even earlier early serial number. The nickel 4" shipped in 1965, but it has a lower serial number than the first guns produced noted in the Standard Catalog at S230,4XX. They were clearly using frames from storage.

The boxes are interesting. The backing is not a plastic liner, but a dense foam mold that is solid. The two lower boxes are factory original with the velvet used at the time. The nickel box is factory original but since it was made at a later date, it has the same foam, but is covered in a nylon type of fabric similar to that previously used in the original black boxes that came with .44 magnums.

I made the interior on the box on the upper right. I'm still looking for a better match fabric to make a better reproduction, since the first year boxes are so hard to find, and I am making a trip to Los Angeles shortly for the search.

Would love to see your 57's too.

Model 57s in the S230000 range shipped in the summer of 1965 and used a heavy satin material to cover the inserts. I had one in my collection that shipped on August 31, 1965 (S230489). I have only seen them with a 4-inch barrel and nickel finish.

Thanks Bill, that's what this material is like. Mine is just a few digits off yours, shipped to Rex Firearms. Maybe the same batch?

Odd that the serial numbers were so low on this batch. My other 57's are in the 240,000 and 249,000 range and shipped much earlier.

Really nice collection Gun Relics. Thank you for showing them to us.

The .41 Magnum chambered in the S&W model 57 is a great revolver. I've been a long time fan of the .41 Magnum after an older friend, who has since passed away, introduced me to it.

I hope to some day find a blued 4 inch first year gun to go with my April 1964 6 inch.

Love your collection of these first year 57s. I have S236,924 a 6” blue gun that lettered being shipped April 20, 1964 to Henkel & Joyce Hardware Co. in Lincoln NE. The numbers were all over the place for these early guns.

Since this is a model 57 thread, do any other model 57 fans wish S&W had made these early 6" revolvers with a 6.5" barrel?

It is a subtle difference, but I think that extra 1/2" of barrel length just looks right.

this is amazing! which is your favorite
The 4" blue, lower left. This is the first one I bought. It was before I really started collecting. I walked into the local gun shop and it was sitting in the case. I didn't know what "cokes" were or what year it was but I bought it because it was a .41 Magnum and it was pretty. It looked like someone bought it, put two rounds though it, closed the case and let it sit for 60 years.

Only later, as I gained knowledge, did I realize that these were rare in first year with the velour case. I've been buying them for a while now as they come up, but they don't come up very often. Three of the guns shipped in April and May of 64. The lowest serial number, the 4" nickel, shipped in 1965.
