Actually these are the only J frames I own currently but I'm happy with my collection so far.

The one on the right is a 60-9 I found NIB at a gun show about a month ago. The serial number is CER and the special order code is 1010. If it was made in 2001 it must be one of the last prelocks made.

The other is a 640-1 I just picked up today. I went to a high volume LGS thinking if anyone is going to have a 640 prelock these guys give me the best chance of finding one. Sure enough this was in the case and I wasn't leaving without it. It's a CBM serial number with a 6292 special order code. It actually has a forged trigger which I was delighted to see. CBM isn't listed in the SCSW but I can see other serial numbers similar that could put it in the 1996 range. I am so glad I didn't have to plunk down the cash for a 640 pro just to get one without a lock.

What did you pay for that 60-9 if you don't mind?

$600 out the door for the 60-9. Not the greatest price but considering it was new in box I couldn't pass it up. It had one cylinder with a carbon ring.

I passed up a 60-10 for the same price a year or so ago and I've been regretting it ever since. I don't know what it is about this area but pre locks like these seem hard to come by. I frequent all the local shows and all the local stores and there just isn't much around.

Those are both good finds. The 640 would be my favorite!

Like mgriffin, I put a XS Big Dot sight on the front of my 640-3 (CWMXXX) for increased visibility, and it works very well. I had TK Custom moon clip it, and added an old-style thumbpiece out of nostalgia. It is one of my favorites; I actually sold it to a friend a while ago but then missed it enough that I bought it back!

As everyone who has one knows, these all-steel guns are a pleasure to shoot in .38 Special.

I would have bought that too, I'm dying for a 60-10

One chamber I meant, not cylinder. The 60-10 is still on my want list but I don't have much hope of finding one. J frame Smiths from that era aren't as common as some other stuff I see. I see a lot of N and L frames but mostly common barrel lengths. 4" K frames, 6" L frames and 8" N frames are plentiful as always.

There were two on gunbroker the other night, one went for 862.00 and the other 750.00

Haha I know I watch the gun broker listings like a hawk. I just searched completed listings recently and I think only one in the last year has sold for under $600. Fugate had a new one but no one could reach the reserve (I tried $600). The buy it now was $1100. It never sold but it's not listed anymore.
