Back when I was much, MUCH younger, I used to drool over the Shooter's Bible. I read that thing from cover to over. I wanted one of everything, and two of most.

But the one I remember coming back to over and over and over again, was the break-top Harrington and Richardson, Model 999, with a 4" barrel. Man, that looked like it was the cat's meow to me. I had visions of myself running a trapline "up north" wearing a black and red wool coat, and smoking a pipe, with that 4" H&R strapped to my side. The fact that I didn't really know where "up north" was, and had never seen a trap didn't matter.

I bought a 999 once, but it was a 6" model and was missing the rear sight. I couldn't find a replacement sight anywhere. I tried to make one, but that didn't work, and I eventually just sold the gun out of fustration. Besides, it had a 6" barrel, not the 4" I lusted for.

Walked into the LGS the other day, not really looking for anything, which is probably the worst time to go in. Looking around the revolver case nothing caught my eye. But over there, in rimfire case I spotted something. No! It can't be! It's not a 4" 999?

Well, it wasn't. It was a 4" 929. Which is almost a 999, only it lacks the auto ejector. You have to manually hit the ejector rod to eject the empties. Other than that, it's the same gun as far as I've been able to find out. This particular one was made in 1976 or so the S/N says.

I know I paid too much for it, but as I like to say, "When was the last time you saw one for less?" Answer...well...never. I have never seen one with a 4" barrel before. When might I see another for less? I'm an old man. I might not live that long. At least they knocked 10% because I looked pitiful.

It doesn't look too bad for a cheap (maybe sold for $100 or so when it was new?) 22 that's about 50 years old or so. Oh for anyone who doesn't know, it's a 9 shot, break top, 22 Long Rifle, DA/SA.

It's resting comfortably in the layaway bin for now. I'll get it home before too long. I'm sure I'll shoot it, but darn it, I don't think that trapline thing is going to work out.

Have had one like that for years and love it. I guess I have to pull my H&Rs out of my safe, because I thought the top-break was a different model number, with the Model 929 being a swing-out cylinder model.

Well the tag at the store, and the layaway receipt say it's a 929. That's all I know. Actually a Google search says it's a 926 also.

Either way, it's close enough.

Now y'all got me wondering if I'm nuts. :D So I blew up the picture of the other side. It's stamped 926 just forward of the cylinder on this side.

That's a neat gun! I too read the Shooters Bible and others until they fell apart. Always thought H&R was cool, especially by having more rounds in the cylinder. A friend had a 999. Well worn top break, 5" or 6" bbl 9 shot. It shot great SA but DA must have been 25# lol. Probably due to that DA pull, I decided on a K-22 and here I am on the S&W forum. Hope yours is much smoother. We need a range report too :)

I remember most H&R and High Standard 22rf revolvers selling for the then astronomical price of $29.95 in the mid 60's.

I don't expect much from it in DA. As a matter of fact, I probably won't shoot it much. I've got a five screw K-22 for what little I use a 22 for anymore. I wanted this one to satisfy the 14-15 year old kid who still lives inside me. :D

That 14-15 yr old kid is expensive company. I keep buying mine motorcycles and ATVs from the 70s and 80s. Sooner or later he’ll get a 70 Chevelle or 68 Camaro. His first 2 cars

Ohhhhhhhhhh...two of my favorite cars from back then. Maybe a 69 Camaro, (with a 302) but the Chevelle would have to be a 70. They just look "perfect" to me.

Apparently the 926 was only made for six years in the mid-70's. Kind of a simplified Sportsman 999. I can't recall ever seeing a 4" 999.

Edit to add: One source says '73-'78. Another source says '68-'72. I'm more inclined to believe the latter. I was working in a gun store from '74-'78 and we sold a lot of H&R revolvers and I don't recall ever seeing a 926 in my life. I can't remember what I had for breakfast but I can remember obscure firearms from 50 years ago.

That is a beauty!! I am a big fan of the H&R 9 shot .22’s and have several. All great shooters and durable little guns. I just bought this one today! Good luck with yours.

The shop where I've got this one on layaway, has another, but it's a NEF, New England Firearms, successor to H&R. I forgot the model number. Looks very similar to yours, but has a rounded butt, with bananna type grips, and is in blue. If that thing hangs around long, I might have to throw it on layaway too. I have even less need for it than I do this one, but since when has that ever stopped most of us? Hopefully somone else will rescue it first.

Congratulations, glad you were able to scratch that long standing itch! And that one is in very nice condition.

I always liked the looks of those H&Rs and I really like .22lr revolvers. I’ve only run across one of those in the used gun case and was tempted to buy, but the trigger definitely gave me pause. It was pretty stout…
