After reading all the problems with the 40 cal shield, I decided that I would not fall victim to a bad design. So when the LGS called today and said my Shield had came in I passed on it and told them to sell it to the next guy (sucker) on the list.
The LGS informed me that I was the 6th person that they had called and the others had passed also. S&W has really tarnished their name with this fluke, I am on the 9mm wait list also, however I am thinking now of waiting and maybe get one when the 2nd gens come out. Until then I am shopping for another manufacturer for a small pistol.
S&W please do better in the QC department.
By the way I own a few FS M&P's and love them.

I'm sorry but I think you put too much stock in what other people say. The gun comes with a lifetime guarantee and if...IF...you had a problem of any kind Smith would make it right. I have some K frames that others have said are "weak" and are "junk"...turns out to be some of the highest quality, dependable, sweetest shooting guns I own! Many younger shooters scoff at my 3rd gen autos because they aren't the latest fantastic plastic...then fail to say much more when I start shooting. Same story for my Walther PPK/S by Smith...fine gun with a rep it doesn't deserve.

I can completely understand your concern with the mag drop issue that has occurred in a small percentage of Shield 40's but it would not stop me from buying it knowing that this is a small (granted an important one!) fix to an otherwise, by all accounts, outstanding gun.

I hope you find your gun of choice...but when you do I caution you from reading too much on whatever it may be because you can find complaints about every gun out there.

JMHO...worth what you paid.

so you have no first hand knowledge about a product and you go on the internet and call it junk. let me ask you do you walk everywhere you go because applying your logical thinking to vehicles you havent bought any vehicle in years since i can find people trashing every brand out there.

Yeah I must have bought the only .40 without issues because mine works fine. Couldn't be happier with it.

I just wish I could get my hands on a Shield. I'm waiting for the CA compliant version and have already paid at my LGS. Got the 40, already ordered the 9mm barel and mags.

With the S&W waranty I think you also made a mistake. I have a 2 M&P 40c and a Karh PM9 but the shield may turn into my primary EDC. Just a bit bigger than the Kahr but pack more of a punch. The shield is the PERFECT gun IMO but I haven't shot it yet.

Its never a good idea to buy the first edition of anything mechanical. Ill bet the guys who were disappointed by the very first Model 39s were impressed by the 5906.

Thats why I never buy the first run of a new design ill let some other guy pay several hundred dollars to be part of the research and development team.

Unfortunately, this is the problem with the "error-net" as Vickers calls it. Every unhappy soul is given a public forum from which to spew forth vicious lies and gossip, trashing something in the process.

After reading many hundreds of posts, it is easy to get depressed, because a tiny percentage belly-ache about every little thing (tiny blemishes, etc.) and an even tinier percentage have an issue that is not present on the overwhelming majority of examples (mag drop, for example), yet the "squeaky wheel gets the grease."

I understand the original poster getting worried, but I will bet that just as many got buyer's remorse when confronted with a new pistol and an angry wife when it is time to pay real estate taxes, personal property taxes and buy Christmas presents for the kids. Not to mention dinner for all of the hangers-on whiny relatives that you never see except when it is time to get a Christmas present. :)

I think S&W gets unfairly trashed, and it is too bad customers are not treated to the whole picture (number produced versus number returned for this mag drop issue). Of course, the belly-aching whine-bags would just say S&W is not being truthful anyway.

Why do we give the vast majority of whine bags the time of day when they represent such a tiny fraction of the number of buyers?

Oh, wait - that sounds almost like a question we could ask about a number of tiny percentage loud groups who like to trash a politician for not becoming a card-carrying member of some wild-eyed radical "save the whatever" group.

Sorry for the rant.

To the original poster: I mean YOU no disrespect, and understand how you could get discouraged at the amount of whining we read compared to the number of good reports we read. I get discouraged at times as well.

:)

I have 2 of the 9mm Shields and both have been flawless with everything put through them. And as stated above with S&Ws lifetime gaurantee you can't go wrong.

The Shield is beyond 2nd generation design. The Shield is the proven and tested M&P. I would not hesitate to purchase the 9mm.

I have owned a Kahr CM9 and Beretta Nano and shot most compact 9mm and the Shield from my experience is a tough act to follow.

Other than the mag drop issue that has been identified and resolved, where is the need for a second generation? What exactly is the "bad" design? A little over exaggeration or paranoia maybe? I haven't seen any other issue raised that would give me a concern. My shield 40cal has exceeded my expectations.

where are you in ca some places I know do single shot exemptions you might want to ask around and see if some lgs will do that for you.

My 9mm Shield has dropped mags. I need to determine if it is my doing (when I am done spending all my range time on longarms)

As stated earlier the M&P is a PROVEN reliable design, The shield is NO different. I have both the 9 and the 40 without a single malfunction. The only issue i has was the white front dot fell out which is not a problem.
My 40 has NEVER had the mag drop issue (over 1,100) rounds. ALOT of people report the negative issues on this forum, very few report positive issues. I can alomst bet there are more perfectly functioning shields than there are failing ones.
S&W is a great company with an outstanding customer service reputation, I for one have sent firearms back and the repair was done at no cost and they also did a few extra upgrades (at NO cost). My M&P 40c slide stop broke off (Still NOT a catastrophic) failure, the gun still worked flawlessly. I live near the factory, I dropped off the gun wnet out for breakfast and two hours later the gun was repaired FREE OF CHARGE. plus the did a complete stip down of the weapon replaced springs and pins and a detail cleaning.
Thanks S&W from a very long time loyal friend and customer

I've had my Shield in 40 S&W and have "zero" issues with over 400 rounds of all types of ammo including my own reloads 4.5gr of W231 and a AOL of 1.132 or there abouts. Don't listen to a few (yes few) feedbacks to condemn a perfect CCW weapon. My two cents.

Purchased a Shield .40 on June 8th. Installed Apex DCAEK and a set of Big Dots. (Still adapting to those, but it is coming along.) ZERO mag drop issues, approximately 700 rounds down the pipe. 2 FTF from the same box, in the same mag, of WWB.

When either mag is inserted there is a distinct click when the mag lock snaps into place. The 6 rnd mag has a little wiggle, but has never dropped. The 7 rnd is tight as a drum when inserted.:D
