S&W model 58 nickel finish, this is my first ever Smith&Wesson pistol and I really like it! I have been looking for a nice used model 29 4in bbl for a long time and a friend had this up for sale and I figured it's close enough to a 29 so why not pick it up??? :) He said he was the original owner and it was made in the early 70's and came from the factory with a target trigger, target hammer and target stocks. The finish is in excellent condition (very nice). I don't know anything about these pistols but he claims they are kinda rare in this configuration is this true? Is $800 too much to pay for this? I would rate it's condition at 98% solid. Even if I did pay too much I really think this is a fantastic weapon.

Now that is the way to start off your collection. That is a very nice looking gun and very hard to come by these days. You will like the 41 mag round.I know here in CA that price is good.I saw a beat up one in blue last year sell for $750.00 here,so a good looking nickle one would surely do better than that.

Nice sixgun!

The vast majority of Model 58's left the factory with standard hammer and trigger and Magna stocks that have a rounded bottom edge. Folks often call them "modified Magnas" or "plain clothes Magnas." Often, some dealers would replace the standard items with the target variety, which were available as replacement parts or upgrades.

You did real good/great! Congrats on a fine S&W chambered in my favorite caliber. That 58 is beautiful. I can't tell ya if them grips are original or not but they do feel better with the targets over the magnas.

The .41 mag can do everything the .44 can do with the right load and bullet. It'll buck good with a heavy load, but is gentle with a LSWC at 800 fps. It is way underrated IMO. I now own four of them. The last is a model 58 like yours but blued that I have wanted for years as I sold a beauty back in 85 for 225.00 IMS. I'm slapping a set of the Executioners stags and a Tyler on it. Should look prettier when the grips arrive.

Please PM me if you have any Q's on loads for that baby.

Don't sell it! Ever! You Will Regret It!

SG :)

I am fairly certain the target options were added by a previous owner. The correct stocks for the 58 are much harder to find and cost more when you do so their absence reduces the value a bit. A serious collector would be disappointed by the non-standard additions but as a shooter it should work great.

I wanted a nickel 58 for a long time but to me such a gun is worth about $350. That explains why I don't have one. I paid $189 for a blued one but that in 1988. I have seen them sell for more than what you paid. I don't understand why, but they do.

$800 bucks is about what they sell for, I have 850 in my blue steel 58. They SHOULD be $400 guns, but they seem to have a cult following (yes, I am a cult member) that drives the price up....
I am carrying mine on duty...
I likewise suspect that the TT and TH, along with the target stocks are added by an owner over the years.....a factory letter would be the only way to know for sure.

Here is a picture of the aftermarket grips he gave me, he said they are "Coke Bottle" reproductions... they have a nice feel to them.

Now that's the way to start a collection. Don't let folks fool you into thinking that you 'settled' for a 58, they are great guns and the 41 can do pretty much anything that the 44 can. Just remember that the 41 mag is .410 and the 44 is .429, so not a huge difference in size anyhow....I was converted over to the 41 mag years ago and have hung with it ever since. I got my first 58 a few months ago and now have two, many thanks to the forum members who helped out with that BTW.

Here are my two 58's, both first year guns.

Maybe we should start a 58 club?

SP..I beg to differ but I have seen a LNIB 58 with TT and TH so marked on the box. I think once a long time ago saw one with original Target stocks also...

I would have the gun lettered...it may come back all original...

When a NIB nickel 58-1 sells for $750 wholesale why wouldn't a mint 58 be worth just as much... Times are changing and things are just getting more expensive...

Just last week a NIB blue 58 sold for $1475 on GunBroker...

Dave...if you are looking for ammo..try Georgia Arms..they have a 210 hardcast at 950 fps that duplicates the original lead Police Load....without all the leading the original swaged bullet did. Also if your friend has the original box, it will be marked on the end what kind of hammer and trigger it came with.

SuperMan- Fairly certain means I strongly believe it, not that it's a guarantee. Target options are incredibly rare on a 58, but not impossible. People do kooky things when special orders are allowed.

I'll sign up for the fan club! Mines a 1959 model, same age as me:)!

Them are two nice twins you have there sir. Love them grips!

@ Sheriff. You are well armed with that 58. Pack my 657 quite a bit and never feel undergunned with it. What load do you use? I like SGD's.

Many eros ago the shop I worked at part time ordered their Smiths from a wholesaler, "Gil Hebard" (sic). I think that dealer added or subtracted parts.
We would received new Model 19s with magna grips and Model 28s with TH, TT and magna grips. Sometimes Model 10s with TH, TT, and TS.
Possible your Model 58 was likewise added TH, TT, and TS by the Wholesaler before a Dealer/Gun Shop received it.
