This past weekend my old faithful coffee maker failed to answer the call for the first time in the 25 or so years it has been on the counter. Turned it on and nothing. Since then I've been making what my wife calls "bachelor coffee". I put 4 coffee mugs of water in a pot with 5 heaping teaspoons of coffee. Turn it on and when it boils, take it off the stove, set it on an oven mitt, wrap it in a towel, and in about 10 minutes I have a nice hot pot of coffee. I settle the grounds by sprinkling a little cold water in the pot.

This works fine for me, but we have family coming for a few days over the holidays and I'll need something that produces more coffee, more quickly. Any recommendations?

25 years! I imagine it was probably made in the USA. The new ones are....you guessed it....Made in China. We bought one a year ago and it lasted almost 12 months before it went into the trash. We now have a Hamilton Beach, also MIC, but it works great...better in fact than the Mr. Coffee.

Every Mr. Coffee and the identical-except-for-the-logo Black & Decker I've owned has given good service for years. I would buy another one, made in China or not.

But as it happens I have a spare, given as a premium years ago by the Gevalia people, that I've never used. Don't even remember what make it is, but if my Mr. Coffee croaks I'm set.

Replace your Mr.coffee for yourself and think about getting a coffee urn for those occasions when you need to make more.

Target's has a Hamilton Beach 40cup for $40 as an example. It's not as quick as the Mr.Coffee but I'll bet it would taste better.I've always preferred perked coffee over any drip style.

I guess I drink more coffee than any 10 men alive!

I can burn out a Mr. Coffee in two or three months easy... same with the other cheap drip coffee makers. If you make less than 4 or 5 pots a day, they may last you a year, maybe more?

The only coffee maker that will last us a year is a Cuisinart.

Ya got'a have coffee!

I'm a Bunn fan. But the price has risen steadily over the years, and I went decaffeinated in 2004, so what is the point! The wife takes a small flask of regular coffee with her to work every day, but I dought we will replace it when dies. We have 2 of the old Dripulators from the 50's/60's, we bought at yard sales. (they are stove top operated drip coffee makers that we paid 50 cents for at yard sales. we use them camping,) You could use your filter basket with normal filter and coffee set over the coffee pot, and pour boiling water through it slowly (about 2-2.5 minutes). That is all Mr. Coffee and the Dripulator did! Or make a full pot bachelor style and pour it through the filter and basket to catch the grounds (through the coffee grounds tastes better) but did it both ways before owning a Dripulator.

Bought a fancy Keurig. Lasted almost 90 days before it broke.

The $20 Mr Coffee we had for years was still working fine before we replaced it with the 90 day broken Keurig.

Mr. Coffee machines used to last 10-15 years. Now days, I just plan on buying a new one every 18-24 months. You'll go crazy looking at the customer ratings on Amazon. There are no 5 star coffee makers, and very few 4 stars LOL.

We've tried other brands, Sun Beam, Bunn, Keurig, but we always go back to Mr. Coffee. If you run a half and half water/vinegar mixture through them every couple of months, it keeps them working.

Those old Drip O Lators make a grooood cup of coffee. My Mom and Dad have a couple of them. I think the secret is that the water is boiling when you pour the water through.

Sounds pretty simple to me, get another Mr Coffee.

Yup. They're like $15 or so. If you want to step up, get a Keurig. I replaced my dead Bunn with a Keurig last year, and quickly wondered why I hadn't bought one earlier. A one cup coffee maker is not a realy great choice for a group of coffee drinkers, but I'm the only one in the house who drinks coffee, so it's all good.
