Nice 28 and good price. Paid that much for mine about 3 years ago and was glad to get it for that. If you have never taken apart a revolver before I wouldn't practice on that one. A few drops of Breakfree down the hammer should lube it up nicely.

I carried a Model 28-2 as a duty weapon for several years. Finally sold it to my Father-in-law. I'm headed down for a visit and I think I'll see if I can buy it back !!!

I have a brilliant solution! Leave the NIB 28 alone. Get a somewhat used 28 for a shooter. In these parts, a really decent 28 6"shooter, with gentle mild blue wear and Goodyear's, will run something around $400-450.

That's a nice revolver. I do not understand the concept of owning guns and not shooting them. I guess if you have the money to put together a significant collection of unfired examples then, that, I would understand.

Don't get me wrong, I don't object to collections and there are lots of guys here with awesome collections. I'm glad they share photos and descriptions along with known history that's interesting provenance of the gun. I just can't keep my hands off and ammo out of my guns. I want to know how they shoot.

I think you did fine on your deal. These guns are finally getting the respect they deserve. If you have never owned a 28 and enjoy shooting then you shouldn't fight the urge to fire it. These N-frame magnums were designed tough to handle a steady diet of magnum ammo and handle it, they do.

Those little J-frames guns chambered in 357 magnum are torture to shoot. Even a K-frame can be painful with full magnum loads and heavy bullets. If you really want to know what a 357 is capable of without the pain, as originally intended, shoot a 6 inch N-frame. A joy indeed!

Its a tough decision and i have always said it is best to shoot them as opposed to keeping them in the safe but, when you actually own one thats 40 years old and never shot, it gives youa different perspective. On one hand, I know it will decrease the value if I shoot it and on the other hand, it will probably go up in value if I dont. I think in this situation, the best solution is to buy another one to use as a "shooter" since they are everywhere to be had. They are only virgin once.

If it feels slugish-sticky, what I do first is put on some rubber gloves, take off the grips, and run some non residue brake parts cleaner through it, with the red tube stuck into anywhere it will go-hammer and trigger, cocked and un cocked. Keep revolving the gun around and work the action a bit in between sprays. Turn it all around to let it drain, and set it aside to dry. I leave it alone overnight. Then check the action, there should be a felt difference if it was gunked up. Add a small ammount of lube. If this doesen't do it, you can repeat, or proceed with more invasive measures. I have had dramatically positive results with this simple procedure. Flapjack.

Beautiful gun and you got it at a heck of a price. Congrats. If it were mine (I wish!) I'd shoot it sparingly just to zero the sights and make sure it has no issues then clean it and put it away. If I wanted one for a shooter I'd seek out one in less than pristine condition.

A gun shop near me has one in Excellent shape for $700;,,no box or accessories, but not fired much, blue, same stocks???is $700 a good price??

That's a great pick up and a nice price for NIB. Around here, an average M28-2 (90%) is going for $500+. Now you've got a tough choice- to shoot it or not to shoot it. I haven't seen many virgin HPs, and yours might be one to put away and admire. You can always buy yourself another 6" (although I prefer the 4") to take to the range. Good luck, and congrats!

amazingflapjack, brake cleaner will remove all lube down to bare metal. I would not let sit overnight without lube unless introducing rust to the revolver was acceptable.

You might slide by in a dry climate but why risk it?

Run a test on a piece of junk metal and see what happens.
