One of my nephews is working on his Masters degree in Washington, D.C.

This would be one of my wifes older sisters boys.

He was recently robbed, at knifepoint, while walking somewhere in D.C.

They got his iPod and about thirty-five dollars.

Thankfully, he wasn't hurt.

What's the deal in D.C.?

Guns only legal in the home? No carry?

I'd give him a gun if he could legally carry it.

The only people in DC that carry guns are cops, retired cops and criminals. The criminals are better than most at spotting cops and retired cops so they are pretty safe. Gun control makes the world safer, if you are a criminal.

I havent been to DC since the mid 60s but even then you didnt walk the streets after dark, and some places in daylight, its one of those cities where they tear down the slums and build ghettos

No carry. Used to be that even owning a handgun in DC was verboten; that was the basis of the Heller suit last year. Now you can own one but only in your own home or transporting to a range. Bleh. And we think NY is bad?

Sorry to hear about your nephew. Thank God he is ok. Handgun carry isn't allowed, but what about mace? In a situation like this it may have been good.

How does the law affect black powder guns? Just put an 1851 in your belt and away you go.

to jail.........it is Washington, DC, a designated unarmed victim zone.
If you use a weapon to defend yourself, the knife-wielding robber will be out before you are.
Also be sure to carry enough money for a bag of crack, or the robber may kill you for not having enough money.

i went there on a 4 day long weekend field trip in school. seemed like anywhere off the main drag of the Mall or one of the national monuments was not a good place to be for a white boy like me, day or nite, even less so unarmed.

Ummm, this must be impossible. He must have lost his iPod and money because there's no crime in DC, just ask our Pres.

Ok, sarcasm off, sorry about your nephew, I hope he's not too shaken up.

Not sure where it happened, Waldo. I'll ask my wife later to see if she knows.

Washington, D.C., where our Senators & Represenatives run around with armed bodyguards. No self-defence for the common folk, though. They have a health & retirement plan we peons just dream about. "All men are created equal"....some more so.
I hope your nephew is OK.

I'd be careful about suggesting the mace idea unless he is truly dedicated to self-defense. IE, works out, practices dilligently, and develops the necessary mindset. This is not something to be casual about.

I have seen some pictures of a cop who took on a knife-weilding suspect. The cop was a big guy, in great shape, and I believe trained in martial arts. He thought he didn't need to draw his gun to handle this scumbag. The bad guy cut him up something awful. Really laid him open. I've looked for the pix on the web and can't find them.

When I drove a truck,I was told I could not have a firearm in the truck. I use to have a flare gun with me.It is not a firearm.Several truck drivers told me about that trick. Never had to use it,but shot it a few times to get a feel for it. I would not want to be shot with one!!!!!!

I wonder if the NRA would help your nephew sue the city for violating his rights?

I go lots of places I shouldn't, alone and "unarmed". I guess I look big, mean, and redneck enough that no one has cared to take me on. Then again, I might look like I have nothing worth stealing.

I'm glad your nephew wasn't hurt. He'll just have a memory to counteract some mandatory corporate diversity training class in his future.

Mistake #1: Wearing an Ipod.

The Official Rule:
Thou shalt not display wealth in front of the maggotry.

Since he can't carry a gun legally, I'd suggest sending him a $10 watch from Walmart.

That sure looks like them. I see that according to Snopes that they are pix of a convict who ran afoul of his fellow inmates.

I was shown pix much like those in a class I took in February, and told that the guy was a cop, etc. (See my previous post). So either Snopes is wrong or my instructor (an active duty police officer) was mistaken.

The point was that a knife can do a lot of damage, maybe even kill you. You have no way of knowing the skill level of the thug threatening you with a knife. You don't want to be half-assed about confronting him.
