Hey guys and gals, I just picked up a 15-3 this afternoon. It is in really nice condition and has the original box with it still. I am really excited to get out and shoot this thing some but I am running into a problem. The previous owner had mounted a scope on it (it looked really funny because it is a 4" standard config and the scope extended beyond the barrel). Anyway, I do not have the original rear sight and I am looking for one. To my knowledge there have been 2 or 3 different styles of sights over the years and I want to get the period correct one. Does anyone have a picture of the top strap of a 15-3 or can tell me what rear sight to use.
Thanks in advance. And before it is asked, in the very near future I am going to get my camera out and take a few shots of the 15, the 649 and the thrid model top break ive picked up recently.

here is a photo of my 15-3. It doesn't have the white outline rear sight just standard rear sight. I think any K frame rear sight will fit on yours, but i'm sure one of the more qualified members will clarify it for you.

This one dates around 1973

P.S. attach a photo, I always like to see another S&W

Congrats on that 15-3. A truly beautiful and classy revolver. I have a 2" snub and it is one accurate and handsome revolver. With that 4" barrel and some good ammo expect 2" groups at 25 yards sandbagged. Mine will do 3" groups from that range with ease. Bought it unfired but had to shoot it and love how it is so well balanced in the hand. The condition of mine is 99.9% and only 7 shots through it. The experts will be helping you out on the sight, but check out Numrich Gun Parts as they may have one in stock. You could slap a Millet on it as they are great sights IMO.

Waiting for the pics of that classic and congrats again.

Through recent experience, you need to measure accurately, absolutely no guesswork, the distance from the forward leaf screw hole center, to the center of where the rear elevation screw sits. I recently sold a rear sight assembly that was for an n frame to a member who had an older vintage k frame. I didn't know if it would fit, so I called a friend who has a number of k frames for measurements, and they were all over the place. The buyer measured his gun and told me that mine would fit, and I agreed to give him a refund if it didn't. His response was," perfect fit, thank you very much". I fully expected to have to refund his money. I fequently install white outline kits on S&W revolvers, and I have tried to use some of the resources for sizes, and most of the time just waited to use a micrometer to measure what is being replaced. Most of them are either .126 or .146. A .126 replacing a .146 can be raised, if needed, the .020 difference with the elevation screw, but .126 needs a .126 replacement. I have called S&W for sizes on items, and then they not fit. I tend to give someone the encyclopedia answer, or no answer. Point being, get accurate measurements and order by those measurements!
