I found this at the gun show today. A guy was walking around with it. No box and it had these service grips on it. He said it was his father's, but he did not think he fired it. There are a few minor marks on it (I have not seen many S&Ws that you can't find some minor mark) but it does look un-fired by the conditionof the recoil shield. The serial number is N139XXX. My other 29-2 4 inch is N64XXX but has been fired and is about 90%. Both early 70s guns.

Great find and very nice looking. It looks good with those grips. I went to a gun show today and it sucked glad someone came home with a prize.

nice one

great find I found a 29-2 8-3/8 95% complete with box, tools, and manuals about a month ago $700.00......... would love to find a 4" like yours

Really nice ... Congratulations !

You all USA guys are so lucky you can find there old models at so cheap prices !
I have 29-2 4" ('75-'76), 6" ('79-'80), 6 1/2" ('73) and 8 3/8" ('77-'78) models but I could not find them here in Italy cheaper than an average price of 1k Euro ... over 1,3k $ and no box or tools but for the 4" model ... :(

I'm envious. I've been looking for a nice 29-2 for a year.

Great find Lynn,

Even if those aren't the original stocks they're right for the peroid and they look great on the gun.

Beautiful condition, a friend of mine that used to work for S&W and I were just talking about that. We both figure there are a lot of 29s lurking around in that kind of shape because nobody really shot them. Dirty Harry made them iconic as the "world's most powerful handgun" and lots of folks just had to have one for that reason alone. After shooting a box (or just a few cylinders) of full house loads they got quietly tucked away. Both the expense and the unpleasantness of .44 Magnum ammo was hard to avoid unless you were a handloader.

It wasn't until silhouette shooting caught on that 29s really got shot (and shot a lot!). Then they started falling apart which the factory really didn't expect, and had to fix with better heat treatments, beefed up parts, etc. in the late '80s and '90s.

So hopefully you'll shoot that great looking revolver. Start reloading, both for the economy and the ability to make easier shooting accurate loads, and shoot it some more!

Enjoy,
/c

Very nice magnum you have there. Still on the hunt for a 4'' that looks as good as yours. Congrats.

Little jealous. :(

I paid $550 for this 29-2. Here is a photo of the right side. I put a set of combat stocks on it to see how it would look. The 2nd photo has the older brother (N64XXX).
