My new 586-8 just arrived!

That is a beauty for sure. I was never a purist and I love the new S&Ws regardless of IL and MIM parts and frame mounted firing pins. I would be proud to own many of them.

Thanks. I'd prefer the no lock but not at the cost of tons of thousands of rounds or bad wear and tear. Like a car, I like knowing the history of them. Only other S&W I own is a 637. Lock and all.

Love em

I picked mine up on Friday and looked it over good, I took it out to the range today and shot about 100 rounds of 38 and +p+ no hiccups great accuracy I loved it. I was th eonly guy with a revolver so I shot slower than anyone else but I didn't care. had a great time. Now if they make one in nickel I might buy another.

It's good to see Smith & Wesson still knows how to blue a gun and they're are putting beautiful grips on some of their revolver. Thanks for sharing.

I was considering a new 586 4" for a "knock-around" gun.
My thought process was that new guns lack the character that old guns have (just my opinion here), so I wouldn't mind a ding or two here and there on a newer model. If I were able to find a really cherry no-dash or -1, I'd be heartbroken if I marred it up (even though every gun I own are all shooters).
I was thinking of a new 586 4", but then I fell into a deal on a 686 4" no-dash, and on a different deal, traded for a GP 100, so that saved me (for now) from having to buy a new 586. Now I have two "knock-arounds". :D

Very nice gun. The 586 is still my favorite.

Beautiful gun except for that pimple above the cylinder release. My wife's favorite 357 is her 586. Enjoy shooting it.

Very nice indeed. I really like the 586. (Except, I personally don't like the locking mechanism on the new guns.)

As for some alternatives for grips, these are Ahrends Retro Combat grips:

If you just want something to take to the range or out in the field, Hogues work fine for me.

I plan on taking it out today and shooting 50 .38 and 50 .357.
Any idea why S&W says NOT to use 38 +p+? They say +p is fine and mention that you can shoot that through any .357 of theirs but they make a not to not fire +p+ in ANY of their guns.

They definitely do and thats part of the reason I ended up going with the new one. I haven't seen a PRIME, 100% condition old one. Im debating whether I'll carry this openly or use it when camping, hiking, whatever. Not so much for banging it up but messing up the blueing. It is not their high polish blue so Im not sure.. If it were, I wouldn't carry it. I have a 1911 thats my rough and tough gun so I might just keep with that.

Id buy them grips if you dont like em

Only reason I'd get other grips is to keep my stock ones in premium shape. Not looking to sell them, sorry

the prime 100% condition old ones are out there...here is my no dash...shipped around april to october 1983. it might have 20-25 rds max through it. it was my dad's gun, he kept it in hiding. i was around 10 when he bought it new. i always wanted to shoot it and the answer was always no. finally, he got a box of ammo for it and shot it. he helped me with one round. the gun went back into hiding and i had not seen it for years until i asked my mother for it a few months ago. she didn't even know dad had it. i still have the original box, but not the paper work.

FWIW the 586 is the all around 357. This gun will give yeoman service for generations. Never owned an L frame of any sort that wasn't accurate.

How is your blueing faring in the holster?

MrCanon, it hasn't been a problem because I don't use it enough to matter. I should change that, but I mainly use my revolvers at the range. If I'm traveling and want a gun with me, it's usually a HP or Sig.

While I'll never buy a S&W with the dreaded lock, it is nice to see that they're still producing nicely blued guns! Wasn't that long ago that it was nigh impossible to find a newer blued Smith.

Beautiful looking, grips and all. Enjoy yourself at the range, I'm jealous.

Thanks, and I just got back from the range

:p missing out

Just got back from the range and what a great gun. LOVE IT.
I was consistently hitting a few inches low and a few inches right but I didn't have the proper equip to sight it in and I was shooting with my dad and sister so it wasn't really the time to do it today. Need to get a hallow ground tip screwdriver too. What a fun gun to shoot though.

Also, it didn't feel as though there was as much recoil as when I was shooting the 686. The only difference I can think of would be the round butt it has vs the square butt my 586 has. The 686 had rubber grips even. Same ammunition used in both. Maybe Im just getting more used to it.
