Bought this locally yesterday from a very nice gentleman who said he fired less than 100 rounds. He bought it from a LGS that I frequent so it's nice to have a little history and get it from the original owner.

My LEO uncle is a serious collector. He sat me down with one of these in my hands and a black leather rig over my lap when I was about 5. I have the picture somewhere. I had to hold the big hog leg like a carbine rifle. My mother was terrified and my Dad and Uncle, PBR in hand, looked at me with manly pride. All I could do was smile and let it burn in deep. I remember that moment vividly (around 1981) and have wanted this gun ever since. These are the pieces I remember seeing as a kid, always staring shyly at the walnut when an officer walked bye. When I hear the word gun I automatically think of a S&W revolver.

This one came with the Bianchi holster, 1 speed loader, 40 rounds of .357 mag and the original manual. No box or tools and no "M" stamp (I like that).

The photo does not do it justice. It's glossy all over and looks brand new in person. Not sure how he stored it but he must have really babied it. The only wear I can see is on the ejector rod and the scuffs on the crane where it swings open. Everywhere else is perfect.

$450 and a B.O.S. for this minty no-dash so I was very happy. A quick check on GB shows these going for more and more these days but it's priceless to me. I would rate it 98-99% so look out because it will be up for grabs in about 60 years.:p

Very nice find, you could sell for $100 more easy. Depend on what make is the holster - looks good so you should be able to get 30-40 bucks for it I would think. Is it lined??????????? Plus if it is a cross draw I may want it :D .

Especially if the holster is lined (has a dark brown suede-like layer on the inside), I would be interested in it. Lined or not, what do you want for it?

Ed

The holster is a cross draw and it is lined with the dark suede. I removed the remark about selling because I thought it sounded tacky.

I just thought I may grab a 686 and THAT, I would holster. Does the liner make it more "valuable" or easier on the finish?

BESmith - I will PM you first if I sell it. Either way, it will go on this site if it goes.

Shiney ! ! Take it out and shoot it. IMHO, part of the joy of a blued gun is cleaning and maintaining it.

Lots of people buy stainless because they dont want the hassel involved in keeping them looking good.

Check out Rusty's Rags, really get that beautiful blue to shining !

You've got a great gun there. The 586 is one of Smith's great works. I had a no dash and a dash-1 and foolishly sold them. I can tell you that you got a good price on yours.

Very nicely purchased! Great looking 586 at a great price too.
Wait 'til your shoot it, you will have a silly grin from ear to ear. My 586 is one of my favorite-if not the favorite- Smith in my collection.

Just shot my 586 4" a few hours ago. They really shoot nicely. I shot both .38s and .357s. The full lug barrel soaks up recoil nicely. Enjoy that gun and the excellent price you paid for it.

Very nice. That is the exact gun I bought in 1981 (and still have). A six inch 586. It was the second gun I ever bought, after my Colt Series 80 Government model (my daddy would have whupped me good if my first gun hadn't been a 1911 .45!). So I've owned mine for 30 years now and still count it among my favorites. Happy shooting and owning to you!

Congrats on a great revolver at an outstanding price. My 4" nickle 586 is by far my most accurate revolver. Shoot nothing but .38's through it these days but handles magnums with a breeze. I never sent it back for the "M" mod and have had zero problems with it in thousands of rounds.

Enjoy!

Congrats, you will enjoy that gun and the memories it will generate. I recently inherited a 686 from a dear friend and it is a constant reminder of him.

Avery11,

You done good! A good price as well.

I like the L-Frame .357s very much, I have four, two 4 inchers and two 6 inchers. They will handle any sensible .357 load and the carry well.

Perhaps the best .357 revolver ever made. Better than a Python in my opinion. And I own and like my 4 inch Python.

My memorys a little foggy..but

No dash and no M.. My memory says my dept ordered us to
M our guns as the (for lack of a better word) that the fireing pin slips thru to contact, can swell up under heating and seize
the fireing pin, locking up the whole l frame. Send it to Smith
let them fix it and add the M. Disclaimer... the 80's were a long time ago!!! Memories!!!

Zuchus,

Did you ever send yours back for the "M" modification?

Thanks,

Don
