I went to pick up my new 686 6" today (my first revolver) and upon closer inspection it was actually a 686 Plus. Not a big deal for me as I'm not concerned with the additional weight. Any thoughts on the Plus modle? I'm not going to compete I just want to have fun at the range. Received my mono grip in the mail today as well. Trying to learn as I go here I've alwas been a semi-auto pistol guy before today.

You'll be happy with your 686. I think the 686 is a must have for revolver fans regardless of the variation. Shoot away!

I believe the Plus is actually a tad lighter, less steel in the cylinder. Only current production .357 that's better is the 627 IMO. Good find! As another semi-auto only guy who is growing to love revolvers, having a gunsmith smooth out the trigger helps out a lot.

On the holster issue, I'm in NJ so that ain't in the cards. A friend of mine just got a trigger job done on his 686 6" and he loves it. They changed out a spring and cleaned up some stuff. He is into competing with his. And I guess 7 is better than 6 until they ban 7 shot revolvers!

You'll be happy with the "Plus". I have one and like it alot (even though I'm a staunch 6 shooter guy)!

Just slipped on the Hogue mono grip. I like the more pronounced finger grooves for my large hands. Time to pick up some ammo!

I own a 686 with 4 inch barrel and a 686+ with a 3 inch barrel. I am looking to purchase the 2 1/2 inch model soon

I can't afford another addiction. I went through this with my 5 Berettas. I know a guy with a 686 4" that has only a few hundred rounds through it and has the Hogue grip. He wants $600 for it. Trying to resist calling him.

686+ is a well respected revolver and 7 is a lucky number too. It use to be hard to find speedloaders for them years ago, but now everyone's got them. If you want some fancy ones check out the ones from 5 Star Firearms.

What to you guys think is a fair price for the 686 4" with only a few hundred rounds through it? I trust the guy, he is a Trooper but $600 seems a bit steep since I just picked up the new 6".

Here in TX thats a fair price. I saw one in a lgs the other day for $699 cash ($729 cc). If you don't buy it....uhhmmmm cud ya give me his #?

I own two: 2.5" and 5". I've not shot the 5", bought it used, checked it over and cleaned it, put it back in the box wrapped in new VCI paper and stuck it in the safe. The 2.5" rides with me in the handlebar bag of my bicycle when I'm out on the trails. Unless I choose to take my 2 1/8" 60-14. Of the two, the 686 handles the recoil of .357 Mags better. But takes up a bit more room in the bag. The 60 is stuffed with .38 Speer Golden Sabre +P.

PS: Revolvers are addictive. Once ya start using one, you won't be able to stop.

My only member of the 686 family is a 5" half-lugged 'Stocking Dealer Exclusive' 686+ from 2004. It came stock with a V-notch rear sight, HiViz front sight, and Ahrends square conversion/fg cocobolo grips. Quite a deal back in '04 for $489 + s/t new at a lgs (The good old days!). I keep several HKS #587 speedloaders loaded with .38 Spcl +P 158gr LHPSWC at the ready for it, even though it resides in the safe. Every caliber/count revolver I have has a speedloader loaded with defensive ammo 'at the ready' for it, no matter the revolver's normal function. The 5" 686+ was my SPC revolver - until I got my 4" 627 Pro (8 shots beats 7... especially when you miss the stop plate!).

Those 7-shot speedloaders, HKS #587, work well with Ahrends wood grips and the OEM Hogue rubber grips, too. Most dealers stock them - you can even get them for <$10/ea with free s/h from AMAZON with their 'Prime' membership!

About gun prices... the marketplace is a bit skewed. $600 is probably a good price these days, especially if it comes with the box and original Hogue rubber monogrip. Good luck on finding ammo!

Nice. Nothing wrong with an extra chamber. I like my seven-shot. You get to shoot 7 full cylinders 7 times with only one cartridge left over in a box of 50 ;) If you haven't shot it yet, shooting the 686 will speak for itself. Enjoy it. As far as ammo being scarce, I've been seeing .38 specials and some .357s just about everywhere in my area. I have HKS speedloaders that work fine if you're thinking about that.
