My new holster

To be fair, that gun gets a lot of use. The offending holster is a Comp Tac OWB paddle. At the time that picture was taken, I had just over 6,000 rounds through it, at least 10x that in dry presses and at least 2,000 presentations. Maybe some of it is due to my technique? All I know is that plastic seems to be more harsh than leather.

Sorry, but that's simply not true. I guess if you only use your gun a little, this might make sense. But, in reality, the Kydex is very hard on the finish. Take a look:

All of the wear you see at the muzzle was caused by a Kydex holster.

Now, it's easy to discount holster wear when talking about the M&P. The Melonite finish on the M&P is one of the most durable on the market. It will withstand a lot of abuse. So, an M&P even in a Kydex holster will not show a lot of wear.

I also agree that a leather holster will do more damage in the long run especially if it's an IWB and you wear it in the heat and you sweat a lot. I use a raven phantom kydex holster and I have no where near the wear on my mp40c that the gun in the pic has. But as far as the holster ( leather or kydex ) and finish of the gun goes I'm far more concerned with the performance of the gun and the ease and quickness of draw from the holster.

That kydex holster is really bad. The only point of retention should come from the trigger guard. The muzzle should not even be rubbing against the kydex enough to cause any of that wear.

That.

All holsters need to be kept clean on the inside as well, particles will do the damage on a finish.

OP's holster looks great… leather is a satisfying material.

Yeah yeah, but all that wear adds character :D

There is also the fact that… it's a gun, not a piece of jewelry. I advocate keeping the safe queens in the safe and a soft bag to take to the range.

The wear on Rastoffs does look rather extreme compared with the rest of the gun, that really doesn't look right and a shame - it's a great looking piece.

It is a nice gun and the wear marks don't bother me. It's a tool and I use it. I carry it in a leather holster every day. If leather is so much worse, why hasn't it worn a lot more?

I don't think it's much worse, if at all worse. It's more or less a question of keeping the inside clean with any holster. A leather holster will hold dust and grit a little more… but the key word is little. Leather is more effected by moisture and so one, but if it doesn't get damp it's obviously no problem.

But, I'm one of those that doesn't really worry. As you say, it's a working tool. If people don't want any holster wear… don't put it in a holster.

The M&P with its Melonite finish is very tough, but Kydex is very hard on finishes. Leather is the way to go if you want to protect your gun's finish.

This is why I use leather lined kydex :) order the Ops holster does look severely pretty and highly tempting :p
