Good Memorial Day to all of you!

I thought I'd post some pics of my 39-2 prior to going to the cemetery to pay my respects to our fallen heroes.

I traded into this 1975-vintage 39-2. It's my third one. The first one was traded away in a moment of weakness. The second is currently "vacationing" at Karl Sokol's farm in West Rutland, Vermont.

I just couldn't live without another 39-2, as I find them a near-perfect compromise betwixt capacity (more on that later), handling and performance.

Since getting her home, I've done the following mods to her:

--3rd Gen trigger (thinner and better geometry for me)
--3rd Gen Disconnector (the stainless type with the wings instead of the old type's cross pin)
--Polishing the underside of the slide (the dicsonnector's travel area)
--Polishing of the feed ramp (duh!)
--New Wolff springs: 14lbs XP recoil, 17 lbs RP hammer, 2.5 lbs RP trigger return and 6 lbs XP 5906 extractor (with tiny S&W "helper" spring inside)
--Polishing of the sides of the sear
--Polishing of the safety/decocker lever's barrel surfaces, detent and slide-safety aperature for a deliciously smooth "snick" when actuating the safety/decocker lever
--Install of the factory 39/59 firing pin (from MidwayUSA) with new Wolff XP firing pin spring (for additional safety)
--New KSD grips (I love 'em!)
--New grip screws
--3rd Gen plastic hammer spring cup (for smoothness)

I plan to do the last few remaining items on her in order to "modernize" her, whilst keeping with the timeless flavor of the Model 39:

--Aggressive 18-degree reverse muzzle crown (done by Mag-Na-Port), polished and cold blued
--Addition of dovetailed SDM 1911 .180" Gold Bead front sight (slide will be reblued in high polish blue by Amerigun)
--Install of backordered S&W factory Model 439 blued steel backstrap (has better angle, checkering and no lanyard ring)
--Install of new S&W factory rear .160" White Outline blade
--Mag-Na-Port "Combat Trigger" modification (trigger is radiused/polished) for DA use (I do it to my revolvers) and will be high-polish blued to match

The sight mods and muzzle chamfer are to excise the Nth degree of accuracy from an already-accurate platform. The great inhibitor to accuracy in these guns are the sights. They are way too low. The front sight is around .125" high, which translates into grouping 1.75" high at 35 feet. The addition of better sights will exploit the gun's accuracy potential. I chose the SDM 14K Gold Bead sight to keep the gun's classic appeal, while enhancing the sight picture exponentially.

Many of you will see the "weird" magazine baseplate. That's because, I have previously done the following to the original magazines (on my previous two 39-2s...):

--Used the guts from the 3906 magazines on the original mag bodies (it gives a flush-fit 9+1 capacity, while enhancing magazine insertions/extractions) and feeding with the new follower (red) profile.

A quick added aside is that I'll soon send off two new stainless 4566 TSW recoil spring guides off to Novak's with an exemplar 39/59 recoil spring guide for them to trim the TSW guide rods down to. The TSW guide rods are the latest H/D guide rods and are a 2-piece affair with a redesigned plunger and plunger spring. They also have a bit more weight to them, which helps the balance somewhat. When they're back, I'll give them to my local Cerakote guy to blacken, so they look original.

I'll of course keep you updated on things as they occur. The 59 project is also going along splendidly. I will post the latest mods/plans to her thread as well.

Those sound like some nice improvements on an already fine looking pistol. Looking forward to seeing both pistols done.

Thanks Charlie! Hope all is well again with your Shorty. The safety looks great. I'd forgotten about that one. I had ROBAR blacken it, as it's stainless. I used it on my 915.

ROBARed stainless? I like it. Works great! I'll get the others back to you ASAP.
All your beautiful projects makes me want to start one lol

Just got home from NH Veterans Cemetary to pay my respects.
Also , that is one fine job you did with that 39-2. I never owned one that was not bone stock. It must be a dream to shoot!

Gorgeous. After seeing this gun and your Model 59 in the other thread, I can't wait to see what the 639 vacationing at Sokol's shop is going to look like when it gets home. I've bookmarked both of these threads as a reference should I hotrod an early automatic one day, since you seem to know your way around them.

All,

They're actually very easy to do mods to. I usually replace the older parts with the newer ones.

S&W did a good job "learning" about the faults of the earlier generations of autos. The 39-2 is one of my favorite autos. So much so, that I traded a Colt Commander for it.

As far as my mods go, I've done a fair bit of visualizing modifications from previous 3rd and 2nd Gen autos to "feel" my way around the old ones.

YouTube has a five part treatise on smithing the 3rd Gens. I highly recommend it. I also have the AGI DVD on the Smith autos. Good kit to use.

I'm NOT a gunsmith by any means. That title belongs to BM1 on this forum. His work on Smith autos is wicked good. I wish I could have 1/10th of his smarts and know-how!

What is a near mint 39-2 in stock condition worth these days?

Wow guess that one I spotted on consignment for $700 was not too far out of line then! Don't know if it was new and unfired because I left after seeing the price of $22.95 for a box of CCI 22 magnum rounds and $800 for a Remington Model Six pump in 30:06. Haven't been back to that shop again!

Nicely done. Got me thinking that some of these modifications might be a good project for my old 439 (mine has been rode hard).

I did read that you were having or had the slide re-blued once the new sights were installed. What did you have done to the frame, anything? The darn thing looks great!

I am sure with all the internal mods it is a dream to shoot.

Thanks for the ideas.

All,

A quick update: Today (2 June 2016), I received the Model 59's front SDM .185" Gold Bead sight. Beautiful quality.

The sight is in the "white" and has a decidedly large .125" wide front bead. If it goes well on the 59, this is the sight that will be replicated onto the 39's front end. The rear will be the S&W White Outline .160 blade. I think that they should give the user a very good sight picture which will greatly enhance the accuracy potential of the piece(s).

Gents,

Another upgrade idea I have for the 59/39-2 that I've been boring all of you about: I've done this on my long-departed 6906. I will send in four (4) new 4566TSW guide rods. As you can see, they are a vast improvement over the legacy guide rods, in that they are solid stainless and have a hell-for-stout plunger and plunger spring (doubtless to lessen the battering of the frame and to reduce recoil forces imparted onto the shooter).

I'll send the four (1/ea for the 59/39-2s and my 659) to Novak's to have them cut them to size (the 1st/2nd gen guide rods are longer; to locate onto the barrel bushing...) and gently radius the cut edges.

Next, I'll send three of them off to ROBAR for blackening (to keep the original guide rod appearance). The fourth will be left as-is and will of course be put into the 659.

I've taken the liberty of attaching a few pics. I believe the stouter (if that's a word) guide rods will be helpful in buffering the recoil forces against the aluminium frames of the 39-2 (X2) and 59. The added weight of the solid stainless is also an added bonus. If memory serves, these improved recoil spring guides were done at the behest of the CHP for their 4006 service weapons. The 4566 (4-1/4 inch barrel) variant makes it perfect for shortening to the longer 1st gen length.

A question for the masses (especially BM1): Is the picture with the plunger extended indicative of what happens when the slide/barrel is in full battery? Second, is the picture with the plunger retracted indicative of the guide rod under full recoil?

Again, I'm not sure of the efficacy of the upgrade, but the plunger action of the newer guide rods can't hurt and may buffer the recoil forces upon the frame. Yes, I've tried the Buffer Technologies shock buffers. They last about 20-30 rounds. At $14/per buffer, it gets expensive really, really quickly.

Verrry Interesting mod, please keep us informed on your results.

Im having a little trouble noodling out how having a longer plunger spring or heavier guide rod would help reduce any recoil or frame battering as IIRC the rod doesnt move during recoil .

IIRC the raised flat rearward edge of the guide rod sits in a small shelf cut under the barrel and also contacts a ledge in the frame but that spring loaded plunger extends through a small hole cut in the frame and compresses against the slide stop to keep it in place.

Edited to add, HAve you considered the possibility that a longer plunger might cause difficulty inserting the slide stop if the slide stops pin strikes the plunger at its center when being pushed through the frame during assembly?

Perhaps a good experiment before committing is to remove the slide stop and place the new SS guide rod in position then push the take down pin through the frame to see if it will compress the plunger or strike it dead center.

Engine49,

Works perfectly on both the 59 and 39-2. Thanks for the review. It's good to measure twice and cut once...

As I recalled, it worked well on my 6906. I'll advise on the final outcome.

You probably already know this, for future reference, one piece guide rods for the 4006TSW.....and other TSW models with a 4" barrels can be had at midwayusa or other places. They are often out of stock but they get re-stocked fairly frequently. I have upgraded some of mine with the one piece rods as well when they needed it.

I don't use buffers and I have never thought about the plunger spring contributing to dampening the recoil but I'll leave that to the experts.

03,

Agreed. I've gotten a couple of the 4006TSW rods for my 5906 and 915. They're about 1/8 inch too short for the bushing on the 1st/2nd gens.

MidwayUSA does a pretty good job with restocking S&W auto parts. I waited 2-weeks for a NIB 439 rear mainspring housing. It came in about one-month prior to their estimate. Better to under-promise and over-deliver...
