My New (to me) 5906

Hey all,

First off, Happy Father's Day! I would like to introduce my latest addition to the 3rd gen addiction. Thanks to all for your help and feedback in this thread http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-semi-auto-pistols/254342-425-5906-good-price.html here. As mentioned, I bought the gun for $400 OTD at my LGS. I look forward to some range time, but have new recoil springs on the way, to be safe.

Very nice/ clean 5906. Congratulations on a great gun! You will really enjoy it.
It looks like an older variation with the square trigger guard. I have one very similar. That Box is in unusually nice condition. Don't throw it out. As these eventually become collectable that will add to it's value.
Mine is a real tack driver. And I never have problems with it. MY S/N is starts with TDK41xx. Is yours simliar? Here it is with & W/O Hogue wood grips.

Those grips look very nice! Love the color.

The serial on mine starts with TCR and matches what's printed on box's sticker. I am guessing the original owner (what LGS guy told me) bought it, kept it stored well, and shot it once in a great while. There's hardly any scratches on it, and still has that nice matte finish to it. I forgot to include pics, but it came with a very clean and new looking Galco OWB holster with the square trigger guard shape to it. Fits perfectly.

Your is just a little older but in same era maybe even same year. You got a smoking deal on that for $425. Take good care of her.. I know you will. What is the product on the box? It can sometimes give a clue as to manufacture date range. If it's a 14 round/shot magazine like mine it was made between 1989 and 1991. In 1992 they switched to the 15 round/shot mag. and the rounded smaller trigger guard. Produced 1989 -1999. So yours is definitely an early production example.

I really like the "Squared" trigger guard. I wonder if any of the other Calibers had a square trigger guard early version. Anyway here is a quick picture of mine with some Hogue grips.

@FatMatt - Yours in DAO with the wood grips and square guard looks very sleek and simplified. Nice. Also a question to the three of you... how do the Hogue wood grips compare to the popular rubber grips? Same fatness, slimmer or beefier? I personally like the feel of the rubber grips, as I do have large hands.

Also, neither of you opted for the textured finish. Is there a reason?

Congrats on the new addition. This was the first semi-auto I ever shot. Mine too is the square trigger guard...great find.

The Hogue wood grips are wider than your stock grips and are even larger than the Hogue rubber grips. I have pretty big hands and they fit nicely.
To me there is no exception, I wanted wood grips because they look good, I can make anything functional. Life is too short to have ugly grips.

The Product codes are in the SCSW. They give the # of rounds, the early 5906's were all 14 round, the later ones were 15 round> The product code also has some stuff I have yet to decipher, the approximate year/ range, and in our case the old style trigger is spelled out. The box you see with mine is not original so it's no help to me.

Also, very nice 5906's gentlemen! I just picked up a squared trigger guard version myself last week. I will try and get pictures tonight! My 4506 above was getting a bit lonely with all of the round trigger guard models in the safe, so it was quite justified to me to pick up the 5906!

I bought the wood for the looks. That's why I stayed away from the checkered. The grain shows better in the smooth. I found that I grip just as well with smooth after I got them. They are fatter than the stock grips. For range work I actually like them better. For CCW or if your using in a defensive mode I would go with the rubber.
