I have wanted one of these for many years and finally found one at an estate auction yesterday. made in 1978(thank you S&W Chad). JM stamped of course. I have had a Golden 39A made in my birth year(1950) for several years and it was lonesome. can't wait to try her out when the wind ever stops blowing. enjoy. Lee

The Mountie is my favorite version of the Marlin 39. I have one that I bought new in 1972 and one I found a few years ago in a local gun shop that dates to 1957.

Very nice 39A . I have three of them, one of which is a Mountie made in 1956 .
I seem to go through stages . I've been shooting pretty much just handguns for some time now along with some centerfire rifles while my Marlin lever action .22's have been sitting in the safe.
After reading your post it might just be time to get them out to the range again ....it's a lot of fun shooting lever action.22's of any persuasion.

Good old American walnut and steel Lee. This thread encouraged me to take a few photos of my 1974 39M. I hope you enjoy yours.

Top one is my Marlin 39M. It's my first gun, bought from the first 2 paychecks I earned from that wretched grocery store I was forced to work. Getting paid was a new experience for me, 16 at the time. I've had it for 38 years now. One of my oldest posessions. I probably carried that thing a thousand miles.

The 357 came along 15 years later. 4 different boys got their first deer with that rifle. 158s at 1725 fps is nothing to sneeze at.

The 30-30 was acquired last summer. With the aid of a scope, that rifle will on occasion, put 3 shots under an inch at 100.

Mountie, Maurader, Texan, Marlin had some cool names; even tho, officially, mine are none of those because of lack of markings.

Lee, the Marlin you bought looks GREAT! I hope it shoots as good as it looks and you get many years of pleasure out of it!

The Marlin 39A is arguably the best .22 lever action rifle ever made. I inherited my Dad's 39A made in 1946 and it still looks and shoots terrific! I also own a Winchester 9422 Xtra which is absolutely gorgeous, super accurate, has a better finish and blueing, but overall I like the 39A better because it is a full size rifle. The Winchester 9422, as gorgeous as it is, is more of a kids or ladies sized gun IMO and a little harder for me to get comfortable with. That said, no - it is not for sale - lol.

Mounties are cool, TDS is cooler. (Take Down Special had shorter bbl & stock) Also have a " Midget Magnum".

Marlin bug hit me hard about 30 years ago luckily, only lasted a few years, did manage to hang on to about half what I had. Wish I kept my early 39a.

This is my 1946 Model 39A.

The Marlin 39A is a very difficult design to produce. While Ruger has begun producing other Marlin designs it remains to be seen if they will be willing or even able to produce the 39A and do it at a competitive price.

The BL-22 will be tough competition on the higher end, and as much as I don't really like them the Henry .22LR will still be dominant at the mid level.

Very nice Mountie you found Lee. Congratulations on the purchase. I sure like the Marlin lever action.

I have a Marlin Golden 39-A Mountie from 1963. My wife bought it for me for Christmas in 1963 from Farmers Exchange here in Amarillo. I am a fan of the shorter barrel Marlin 39-A Mountie straight stock.
