Pretty much like a triple or quad beam balance, but the mechanism design is considerably more complicated. Difficult to explain without seeing one. Similar lab balances of today don't use the same principle as they usually use load cells with a digital readout.

Most folks just follow the directions provided. They do not care how it works, only that it does. Very few are truly mechanically or electronically minded.

Yep, kinda like when I asked my girlfriend where the starter was on my car and she pointed to the ignition switch. Didn't know, didn't care...
